The Radio Is Broken is a three-hour spelunk through the canyons and fissures of humanity's collective unconscious. It sounds as if a field recording of the Culture Industry were a sonic juggernaut barreling down a rickety track—except that tunnel ahead is just painted onto a sheer cliff wall. With occasional forays into what might pass for "normal" music. Prerequisite journey: Cratedigger's Lung

"In December of 2022 Pino Montecalvo (aka Monteclava) invited me for a collaboration: to make a cassette for his label Music à la Coque. Two months later I received Pino’s contribution: short sound fragments recorded from a record player with prepared records. I thought they were quite strong but also crude, and I spent a long time to process and combine them in various ways. After that I did not add any electronic sounds but only my vocal parts, singing and performing the titles Pino gave to his fragments, and of course improvising. "

but the problem is compounded by lazy DJs who just enter the year that's on their CD and then it's clogged up the database forever.

Look, I’m trapped in my self imposed brackets again!👀
- I really appreciate and rest easier when I can see the artist name, song title, derivation of album title, date of release, reissue, source: bandcamp, SoundCloud, or other whatnots. & That’s why I’m not a DJ - I’d never get anything accomplished or done filling in all the info !?!

That isn't "lazy" behavior, Rich. That's one plausible data point. Databases don't get "clogged up" by data if the structure is good. A badly designed database--of which there are examples infinite--causes the problem.

I've been pondering that one. It's also possible that some DJs feel compelled to record the actual year of the thing they're playing. Personally, I want to know when the thing actually came out. In the case of a radical remix, like the Beatles being remixed in stereo and then restored in mono, it makes sense. It's just my pissy pet peeve.

no, because the problem seemed to sort itself out before I could contact anyone.
  11:31pm
Dean:

There are standards for describing objects like books or recordings. Those standards necessarily trade off one benefit for another. That's what standards do. The data point "when the thing actually came out" isn't always discernible from releases of "the thing." Catalogers in my business aren't doing historical investigation. They are describing the object in hand for the sake of facilitating discovery of and access to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm

The college station I was on in Chicago switched from manual playlist entry (which didn't have the level of detail as the playlists here) to having the software recognize, or allegedly recognize, what we were playing. I think they were using Spotify's database or something? Anyway, it obviously only picked up about half of what I played, and sometimes it would identify the samples instead of the track. I hated when they made that switch so much.

I did a stint as a community DJ at a college station! The acting student station manager loved us. The administration hated us. The eventually made us all quit by revoking our potty privileges. No kidding. The made it so we had to walk to an office and ask for a key to the bathroom. Why? Someone claimed some DJs were stealing food from a staff refrigerator so they locked the building down other than the tiny room the station was in.

i'd love to do regular dj shifts, it's more the fact that it's basically run like a commercial radio station, ie it's all automated and all i do is just come on the air every 5 minutes and do ad spiels
