Here's a story about a sentimental tune. Last weekend, I visited my mom. I took her to see Ethan Iverson, Billy Hart, and Linda May Han Oh at the recently reopened Regattabar in Cambridge, MA. We were seated so close to Billy Hart, if I'd stretched out my legs, I'd have knocked over his hi-hat. They played a lot of standards, working out as a trio and breaking in the room, a lot of fun. Midway through the first set, Iverson called a "sentimental" tune, "I'll Be Seeing You," a chestnut that my dad loved, and that a friend of his sang, movingly, at his funeral (his yahrzeit is right about now). Linda May Han Oh introduced it with a long bass solo. My mom and I looked at each other in recognition. We held hands. After the first set, I went to say hello to Iverson, whom I admire. When my mom appeared beside me, I introduced her, saying, "This is my w-- mom." It took all my ten years of training as a psychotherapist to keep me from bolting from the room.

When I hear things like this, I get angry that no one told me about them at the time. But in reality, it's not clear that in 1997 or 2003 that I could have gotten hold of a disc or heard the music before buying it. If I did try to order a foreign record, it might take months to arrive, or it might never arrive. So, I guess I'm spoiled by the 21st century.

Adding to the pleasure of seeing Shibusashirazu in person (which I have never experienced) is the clothing-optional aspect of some of the dancers. The chief ringleader on stage is Shinichi Watanabe who usually is wearing little more than a skimpy red "fundoshi."
