Favoriting October 5, 2023: HELLRAISER!!!: L7 (the band) at The Venice West & Hadestown (not a band) at The Ahmanson Theatre
Bob is kicking off Hellraiser month with 2, yes JUST 2 fantastic and spoooky (extra 'o' for emphasis) events. First up the National Tour of Hadestown rolls into the Ahmanson theatre. With music, lyrics, and book by folk singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell. It tells a version of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice, a young girl looking for something to eat, goes to work in a hellish industrial version of the Greek underworld. Then we are dropping into The Venice West to see the heart-stopping, pulse-pounding rock of L7!

I realize rock critic robert christgau rubs alotta folks the wrong way…(lord knows, whilst thumbing through my well used consumer guides, I enjoy disagreeing with him out-burstingly loud to self!) yet, he has introduced me to a countless variety of artists and musicians that I may have missed out on. Often just because he’s expressed his dislikes for something so tersely in capsule form.
L7 was one he assisted me towards, & in a mostly positive way…Smell the Magic 🤘🤩👏

Was quite surprised to hear them cover this one. Originally done by one “hit” wonders Eddie and the Subtitles. Popular song back in ye olde LA punk days, but I didn’t think it was too generally known outside of us ‘Rodney on the ROQ’ listeners. Well done, ladies.

Huh 🤔 …the kid from the tv series courtship of Eddie’s father fronted The Damned for awhile !?!
Yer anecdote on the R’n’R and goth “elders” still getting their freak-on & having fun with it….Reminded me of a really fun random happening the other night: at our fancy semi-rural co-op food market during closing hour(9pm here in the country) I see this 10(?)year+ old kid and their mom stroll up the aisle near the yogurt section, and child sporting full-on KISS style’d make up with a touch of their own spin of Norwegian death metal vibes (clothes and t-shirt reflecting that). It was so wonderful to see a loving mom completely comfortable with her child doing their thing in such a pedestrian place. Had to ask, if they vibed as far back as KISS, and got a wide-eyed resounding YES! (Musta been surprised such an old way-normal boring looking dork asked 😆haha). Anyway, briefly shared that my first huge show was indeed KISS at MSG 1977 Love Gun Tour. 12/13 year old self most definitely Lost hearing that day. My ears rang for 3 days following. It was weird trying to listen to the teachers the next day at school, with childhood tinnitus temporary tinnitus

the kid from “the courtship of Eddie’s father,” Brandon Cruz joined not The Damned, but the Dead Kennedys. He was part of the Oxnard/Ventura County “‘Nardcore” scene.

Tho LA punk Pat Bag aka Patricia Morrison (The Bags, The Gun Club) DID join The Damned.

Would you be able to share what kind of ear plugs you recommend - I’m really struggling lately with newer onset of mild to medium tinnitus. I’ve been a retired amateur drummer for years now. Any guidance would be helpful. Thanks 🙏
