i was an abbott an costello fan as a kid (i would not be surprised if larry david and jerry seinfeld were too) i think the humor is raw and pre- modern, but cathartic for audiences of that time. there's a a and c movie iirc titled 'the time of their lives' that is quite tender and poetic, otoh there's a brutal episode of their tv show titled ' lou's birthday' which is very funny.

Don't read too much into it. I see from 40 to 60 contemporary dance shows a year, so one every few years is not a trend. It only strikes me because I wasn't taught anything, so these references are learning opportunities for me, when it's obvious to everybody else

@Katharsis: I saw a good dance show by (LA)HORDE Friday, a lot of good stuff there, but a small thing was the ways dancers stood at times: they were doing weird bending of knees with arms slightly apart, nailing the way characters in video games look to not seem frozen. It was intentional, the show was called Age of Content
Avatar 4:41am
David Shortell:

Even Abbott & Costello’s fans might admit they appeared in some schlock. “Buck Privates” was a good one though--I saw it in an Andrews Sisters triple feature at the Film Forum!
“The Time of Their Lives” was their best picture, and most unusual. More than just an excuse for them to do their routines, the script cast them as characters quite different from their famous stage personas.

Still thinking about the cyclists who don’t touch the handlebars: I don’t see it as sexist just because women don’t do it. There’s plenty of men who don’t do it, either… I’m guessing it’s just another way for guys to show off and get attention? As for how they steer, I’m guessing it’s all in the hips, which might be good exercise or another way to show off how strong they are in that region

@jregank, a lot of the Abbott & Costello bits appear to be lifted from the stooges. And other burlesque comics, but it’s not clear who stole from whom in burlesque

thanks, just skimmed article, not same thing, but makes me think 'pity the mta', amazing the amount of passengers who don't pay fair on buses, similar in france?

In France many people don't pay the fare. Checks on this is social control. I have a yearly pass, but checks are way more frequent (and hostile) in my poor neighborhood (think cops in riot gear stopping a bus to check everyone)
In Paris it's a different story, people in suits go through unchecked, they're busy. They are often not paying, they know the game

Many years ago, I had an Arab coworker who would be "randomly" checked several times a day. We got into holding hands when cops were around. It worked, but tells a lot about France

i guess people not paying fare is preferable to check like that, my first time using u-bahn in berlin didn't understand ticket stamping system and got checked, luckily i had enough cash on me to pay fine or i would have been jailed, when i was incredulous at amount of fine, i was risking jailtime with these very serious cops

If you remove Larry from the stooges, you’re left with moe and curly which is basically Abbott and Costello. The same dynamic
