so damn good. let me tell you about that time in 11th grade...
i had a car. two sophomore girls (who i didn't know) approached me and offered to buy me a ticket to see van halen if i would drive them to the concert. i wasn't interested, but counter-offered: they buy me a ticket to see the kinks and i'd drive them to that concert. they agreed. we saw the kinks. a good time was had by all.

I want an Arthur Treacher B side...(no Merv)...sound Fishhhy??
I'm not really sure why I never did see them. I was always a fan. I was a little too young when you saw them. My first concert without the parents was in '82 in 9th grade. I saw The Cars at The Summit😁
most likely!
i didn't see the cars, but a bunch of my friends did. i was already seeing and playing shows at the island and omni by that time, so the cars seemed "too mainstream" for me at the time.
i saw the kinks in 80 on the "one more for the road" tour, and then again in 81/82 on the "give the people what they want" tour. they were really on fire both times, maybe a bit more so the first time. buy hey, the second time was free with two sophs...
though, if it was a weekend, i was probably seeing black flag, or rem, or the fleshtones, or panther burns, or whoever at the island instead. we had so many great bands come through houston back then.
I’m a late comer to the Kinks and a very later comer to late 70s / early 80s Kinks. Those records were always in the dollar been. Now that I want them I can’t find them!
Ha! I know! I’m seriously gonna by Lou Reed’s crappy mid 80s records while their cheap. I don’t wanna pay $100 for them in 20 years when they start sounding good to me!
the island was on south main, just south of 59. parking was under the 59 overpass. they bulldozed it to make a wendy's, that was abandoned. not sure what's on the spot now.
I wish I could have seen Flipper with David Yow on vocals. I read an interview where he said he felt like a silverback gorilla the first time he sang Sacrifice with the band.
It's vaguely coming back to me now! I remember that location! I got my pinky finger smashed in a door at an afterhours party near there at somebody's house when I was like 21. Fractured my pinky and I still have a scar. We were partying so hard, someone just put coke on it to numb it so we could keep going! 😅
fitz was a great place to see bands. i only played there 2x, but saw a ton of bands there over the years. last time was 2018. escatones. what a show! they bulldozed it not too long after that.
Well, that sucks. I've seen so many great shows there!

I moved out of Texas in 1988 so I don’t know a lot of the clubs that were there after that. I have a friend who played the Last Concert a lot, and the Gingerman and the Mucky Duck
i know. my second band, drug puppies, used to practice in what is now the upstairs of rudz. at the time, it was trish from mydoll's apartment. her bf-at-the-time was the bass player in drug puppies.
i moved away from houston in 1990. i'm in dallas now, but we still get down to houston for gigs a few times a year. still see a lot of my old friends from the late 70s-80s. no matter where i live, it'll always be home.
I used to frequent all those places when I lived in the Montrose in the '90's. I grew up in Seabrook and lived in Montrose last 8 years I was there. Then I moved to Southern California for 14 1/2 years. Been in Austin almost 10 years now. Came home to TX in March of 2014😁
Been really trying to dial in the tuning on my guitar lately; this is very instructional

@Candy-O Austin is the one place I get back to. My parents live there and a guy I’ve known since elementary school, who is a musician. Plays drums In Cotton Mather, and has a couple of other bands on the side
