According to www.toonopedia.com... , they weren't even the first to appropriate it as a band name, being preceded by "a rock band called "Major Hoople's Boarding House, which started in 1967". The boarding house in the comic was Martha Hoople's.

My grandfather saved old comics page strips from the papers when I was growing up in Boston in the early to mid- 50s. "Our Boarding House" with the Hoople "family" was one of his favorites. Granddaddy was a WWI veteran and had been collecting for quite some time. Major Hoople in the comics was quite the layabout and the lead character of Manus's novel, named MOTT, came to adopt the Hoople appellation.

  12:04pm
Listener Robert:

I gather Manus's character Mott was described by either the author or some derisive character in Morr's world as "the Hoople", being that "a Hoople" was widely understood from the cartoon character. Daddy would refer to a blowhard as "a Hoople" or "Major Hoople", and since the strip was still running then, I knew what he meant.

Pete: Evidently we missed mentioning Thulcandra, who were up after Twisted Sister. Who the heck were they? www.concertarchives.org...

Thulcandra? Here memory fails, though that band name rings a faint bell.

I got to hang out/chat briefly, with Mick Ralphs (and Howard Leese of Heart) about 12 years ago after their show with Bad Company at the San Diego Fair. I was doing photos of the show for media and was invited backstage.

Covering Melanie Safka's smash hit was an inspired choice. Ian is really wailing!

MtH were courageous in their choices of songs to cover. They could pull it off, every time.

Never tire of "All the Young Dudes"! Anthem rock is an iffy genre. Bowie and MtH show how to do it right.

@Dean. That URL link to the Guinness Rockopedia you posted earlier didn't work. Got any other ways to reach that article about Mott?

Let me give it a try...

I see the issue. You have to set up a free account (well worth it) with archive.org. That way you can "check out" scanned books, etc. You might also have to search within the book for Mott.

Gerry from Miami:

@Dean. I'll mess around with it or maybe just buy the book. Thanks!

From Wiki: According to Mott's lead singer Ian Hunter, interviewed in the documentary The Ballad of Mott the Hoople, the band were in Germany with Lynsey de Paul for the TV show Hits-a-Go-Go in Germany on 24 June 1973[4] when lead guitarist Mick Ralphs walked down a street bending a succession of car aerials in frustration. De Paul came out with the phrase "aerial bender", which Hunter later suggested to Grosvenor as a stage name.
