Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I realized that if there were no backup singers they called it an instrumental. But if anyone sang "Batman" they called it "English."

(I think we generally don't value artists who mostly cover other's compositions, unlike earlier jazz/pop singers, who weren't expected to write the great American Masterpiece, just put their stamp on the best songs they could find)

I’ve seen his recent setlists. Half the songs are from his new album. Then there’s about 2-3 covers. That leaves at most 7 songs from his 60 year catalog. Why bother paying money for that?

Nowadays, people see Bob Dylan in order to achieve bragging rights. It’s not so much about the show, but rather the artist themselves. Same thing with The Rolling Stones. I’ve already resigned myself to the fact that I won’t be seeing any of them in concert ever.

It’s one thing to do 3 or 4 new songs in your show, but not the whole record taking precedence over your body of work. I saw Neil Young do that with the Greendale album and he only had time for 5 old songs at the end. I have disdain for veteran artists that only do new songs in their shows.

Of course - there's no reason Bob *has to* still Tour & Perform. & that's been true already ...who knows how long. But - he always has done. Not always (in that very long time) in the most lucrative or obvious Venues either.
As for the quality of the Shows ...I been glad to have caught him a couple times. Most recently maybe 10 years ago ? (Around 'Modern Times' album.) I was not disappointed then...
dan:
If you’re gonna do the entire new album, then supplement it with as many or twice as many old songs.

The show was not billed as Greendale until the year after I saw him. That was deceptive advertising.

...there's good songs, there's fun songs aplenty in the World
...but Dylan gives like fundamental tools for Life. You carry these Songs - & you freaking *use* them to navigate the whole mess of society & existence...
& - the thing about it is - the tools *he* uses to do it - they were never high-concept or fancy. They're in ordinary five-cent street vocabulary. & in traditional Folk chords & melodies. The better to, in fact, carry them. They are - in other words - in the Forms of the People - of the soil, if you will.
Yet - they are as significant & imperishable as anything we have. Anything @ all.
This is a staggering & mysterious accomplishment.
