Sweet! Upper 70s the next three days here. I was out on a mountain bike last weekend for the first time in about 20 years, and the woods were beautiful. I hear ya on that. I used to live adjacent to a nature reserve that had a four mile trail that I used to do 2 or 3 times a week. Once we moved it became a hassle to drive somewhere to bike and then the old risk muscle started to atrophy. My son has started biking and had fallen a couple times when he was out by himself, so he recruited me to come along and dial 911 for him I guess lol. I was surprised how much I missed doing it. My wife, however, pointed out that it likely wasn't a good ride since neither of us came back bloody

Yeah, it's exciting, fun, great work out. I did take a couple of nasty spills, broke a pinky 1st, then my right elbow (ulna fracture, nasty one). Elbow never healed quite right, still can't fully extend it (most, but not all of the way-it also left mild nerve damage).
Interestingly, this was 10 years ago-I kept mountain biking anyway, but now I'm getting a bit more hesitant (my old partner, who used to encourage me, seems to also have stopped or curtailed his mountain biking).

I'm not learning how to ride a bike until after the revolution or unless I go to the Åland Islands. As long as NYC is completely dominated by cars, it's just not safe. Bikes in NYC are scary to me (I drive in NYC, bike at home in the Jersey Burbs). The bike lane, as conceived in NYC, makes it easy to hit a biker when making a turn, very hard to know they're there. The motorized bikes zip very fast, sometimes zip by on sidewalks, dangerous to my mind. (I'm doing my best not to drive into NYC any more-I had NJ Transit, but driving in is even worse).

I never broke anything (at least that I knew of) but I had lots of dirt rash. Worst injury was when I leaned into a sapling setting up a turn and hit a longish-nub from a recent trail grooming with my forearm. It grabbed hold of my arm and dug deep enough into the muscle that it yanked me into a 90 degree turn. By the time the bleeding and swelling stopped, I looked like Popeye, minus the anchor tattoo. The only time I came close to that level of swelling was when I was bitten by a venomous (non-radioactive) spider

I always think of going to see a Concert of Traditional Chinese Music (when I lived in SoCal - & such opportunities were available to me...) - & the Player was intro'd as being of some distinction. Much expectation ...& out comes the Pipa : a not large flat pear-shaped piece of wood with a short neck, few frets or strings. So ...what can come out of that thing ?? Of course - the Musician proceeds to blow my mind with a stirring centuries old composition about a battle - replete with impressionistic cannon & such sounds - as if it were Hendrix with effects pedals & a wall of Marshalls... Much the same re the expressive power of the Erhu - the 'Chinese violin' that is not much more than a gourd body with a stick for a neck & two strings...

Yeah, I think my wife would've stopped entirely if she didn't get the ebike. For the most part, she only uses the boost about a third of the time because she is usually behind me trying to keep pace, but she tends to use it more when she's the one in front and I'm the one trying to keep pace. We have a nice trail that goes from just north of Annapolis all the way to the BWI airport. It's about a 10 minute drive for us to get there; in theory, one would think biking to the bike trail would make the most sense, but the only option to bike there is about 5 miles out of the way on hilly back roads with no shoulder. Routes 301/50 (8 lanes) and the Severn River are between us and the trail.

Handy -- good call and so sorry RE your friends. FWIW I CAN'T ride a bike due to a TBI acquired at birth. However, when I went in for some neurotesting at the Rusk Institute/NYU years ago, the floor that I had to go to was the adult-acquired TBI floor. I have never seen so many younger people who were totally fucked for life by....biking accidents. Also, when I took a nasty fall last year and bit out part of my lower lip, the plastic surgeon that I went to (one of the few really good ones on my insurance plan) noted that one reason WHY he can take insurance (as opposed to just doing nose jobs for the hoi polloi) was that "Citibike is practically subsidizing my practice." Apparently my kind of injury that I presented with is incredibly common when people faceplant off a bike while wearing a helmet--the front edge of the helmet hits the surface first, but then the chin immediately follows and if your mouth is open because you're screaming and going over your handlebars, it's very common to bite chunks out of your lips on impact.

started listening during the Lhasa folk song. Aha, China and similar to what you did with the USA focusing on regional/tribal/ethnic groups that were dominated. Interesting that for me, the USA felt a bit like, heck yeah, celebrate those cultures. For the Uyghur / Lhasa / Mongol songs I am feeling less celebratory.** I think because the domination of those cultures is a currently active event rather than the oh, whoops, that was bad, USA past.

Since I started writing this you've played more diverse pop music. Some that might be from Han folks. Interested to hear your back announce.

**I love the music, what little I know about it, enjoy and listen to it whenever I can.

We like those kinds of trails. Trying to ride on the roads here difficult because there aren't many bike lanes, and the topography is surprisingly hilly. You can go a couple miles away and the elevation is within 100 foot or so different, but because there are so many rivers and creeks here and the soil is sandy, after centuries of runoff there are cuts and gullies everywhere. The county I live in has more shoreline than almost any other county in the country (533 miles) and more than many states
