A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

I knew Dave well, we used to watch our beloved wild and crazy May Day Parade a few years. He was a very prolific photographer, he had a webpage full of galleries of conventions and paraddes.. I always appeared in the MayDay galleries, preforming with a marching band Dave loved this band, which had a habit of having all of the band laying down to "go to sleep" in intersections along the route and playing a slow somber version of You Are My Sunshine. Then we get up and play a jazzy version of it as we marched off, it was a wacky parade, still is, the theater that put it together no longer can, so its a community effort these days.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Austin Rich:

You'll notice the "vague" attempt at continuity... where this story offers a reference to the previous one. For the first 25 issues, the series is like that: a "vague" collection of stories, that sort of connect. Starting with issue #26, the series shifts dramatically, and becomes an ongoing story with a different sort of vibe.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Austin Rich:

If you like this, and you do start picking up the comic: I would stop reading around issues 136. (And, even that storyline - between issues 114 and 136 - is not easy to read, but is VERY good.)

The problem is: Dave Sim becomes openly very sexist in his personal life, and starts to spout this worldview directly as philosophy in the comic... and it gets bad and tedious, and not fun to read.
