' Carmine Ugo Mariano (November 12, 1923 – June 16, 2009) was an American jazz saxophonist who focused on the alto and soprano saxophone. He occasionally performed and recorded on flute and nadaswaram as well.Mariano was born in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, the son of Italian immigrants, John (Giovanni) Mariano and Mary (Maria) Di Gironimo of Fallo, Italy. He grew up in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston, enlisting in the Army Air Corps after high school, during World War II. After his service in the Army, Mariano attended what was then known as Schillinger House of Music, now Berklee College of Music. He was among the faculty at Berklee from 1965 to 1971. Mariano moved to Europe in 1971, settling eventually in Köln (Cologne), Germany, with his third wife, the painter Dorothee Zippel Mariano.
He played with one of the Stan Kenton big bands, Toshiko Akiyoshi (his then wife), Charles Mingus, Eberhard Weber, the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble, Embryo and numerous other notable bands and musicians.
His unusual application of the nadaswaram, a classical wind instrument from Tamil Nadu, was a notable occasional feature of his work in the 1970s. '

Mighty Discogs claims it's the John Williams who played behind Stan Getz. John "Jaws" Williams would've been about 23 at the time, and had a connection to the Boston area through his mom -- both of which fit -- but would likely have been in Newfoundland or Arizona as part of his Air Force service. So, maybe?

I've told this before, but my first date with MsJazz was to see Abdullah Ibrahim's Ekaya at Sweet Basils, NYC. We got a bit lost in converssation (I maintain she was yapping, yapping, yapping), got there just before they were starting to play. We wound up in seats right in front, just next to the band, and Craig Harris' trombone slide was wizzing overhead much of the show! (I maintain she shoulda known what she was getting into then...)

It appears that the two JWs are distinct, one John Thomas Williams (jazz pianist), the other John Towner Williams (movies). What I didn't know, though, was that Alan Broadbent and Eric Von Essen both played with Bob Brookmeyer!

May be unofficial - not sure. Here's what Discogs has on the label (Eigelstein Musikproduktion) German label based in Cologne formerly known as Neue Welt (2).
Original releases had ES 20?? catalogue numbers.
Ca. 1982 Telefunken 6.25??? catalogue numbers were used.
1982+ releases have the picture logo (earlier ones do not).
1985+ releases reverted to ES numbering.

There are no stupid questions, only stupid drunks. And, yes, there is a Cannonball -- or to be precise, a Cannonball (2), which owns the distinction of being the first flaming frozen drink in the Stork Club Cocktail Bible. Cannonball (1) is lost to time, having ushered its inventor into the corner booth eternal before it could be written down.

2oz Glen Passaic
4oz pineapple juice, canned
1oz lime juice, fresh
1oz simple syrup
5g liquified propane gas

Combine ingredients in a blender with 1 cup ice, and puree until smooth. Using a length of surgical tubing affixed to the tip of a torch, allow propane to bubble through. Pour into a hurricane glass, garnish with an umbrella, and set afire with a long match.

Now add a Scottish drum and fife corps with the former and reigning Scottish drumming champions Jimmy Catherwood and Joe Noble, kilts and all, as well as some 300 fifers hidden in the audience of a theater packed to overflowing

That's bloody awesome! Thanks for such an awesome introduction to Charlie Mariano. New to me, not to hubby the jazz fiend. Cheers for the chat fellow boids, hope your Sunday is the best.

As Dan Bodah has made sure we know
- Konakkol is like 'Indian Beatboxing' ! My understanding is - when one learns the Tabla Drum in this Music - it is also transmitted Vocally - & you have to be able to articulate it that way as well. I believe there are like five specific syllables corresponding to the Drum sounds... I am not especially Informed here...
