I wouldn't know, having never encountered any such thing...There is a post-graduate grant-based residency thing at the Banff Arts Centre or whatever it's called....or there used to be...ultimatele though I consider myself lucky, because if I had to attend university or even a college today I would not be able to. If tables are in the input data, then it's the same as producing coherent text—producing a statistically likely pattern. Since the models often absorb all of Wikipedia and much of the internet, they have lots of tables in their input.

I get that, LG, but these are tables bespoke, if you will, for unclean data. This means AI can emulate a table, but tailor it to the messy data, e.g., by recognizing that the sum of these day numbers is that number, then placing that sum in the respective column.

Read a great (summary of) a study on LLM's. If you asked them to multiply a number by 9/5 and then add 32, they could do it 90% of the time (because people asked for celsius to fahrenheit conversion in search engines). But if you gave it a similar math problem (multiple by 8/5 and add 47) they were wrong 100% of the time.

Right. I'm trying to recognize how a table is like a language, how it expresses a syntax, such that one can begin to predict what the next border in the table will be and then what should occupy the cell.

And if LLMs have absorbed arithmetic, then why does the circumstance DJ Peter describes occur?

Thinking of a NAS, haven't been able to get the external drives (connected to an upstairs computer) to play properly over the stereo (downstairs). I've gotten some connectivity, but everything is downsampled to mp3 when I do (likely something in a setting somewhere that I can't find.)

The tools I'm using so far have not "hallucinated" case law, but that's because these are trained exclusively on corpora of legal documents. A person on my staff routinely uses many of the new, low-cost AI services, by way of casual experiment. These AIs are larnin' us!

I grab all files as available. Lossless if I have the choice, but I don't discriminate. I have everything on a 20TB external drive, which is backed up on another drive using my Mac's Time Machine AND in the cloud using Backblaze (which Jeff hipped me to). Backblaze has been excellent. When my last external drive crashed, Backblaze had everything lovingly saved. Shipped me a drive with everything preserved on it. I had the option of just buying that drive, or copying it all over onto a new drive and shipping their drive back (which is what I did).

doctorjazz, Might the NAS mp3 issue have something to do with the MQA setting on the Technics. If it is on, then Direct is off. I can't say why that would result in mp3, but I'd try both settings, MQA on/off, which entails Direct off/on.

Thanks, Dean-I have to go in and look at those settings. Did you ever get it to Stream WFMU (I love being able to do that)?
I use a music playing program (JRiver) to listen to music on the upstairs hard drive, the setting issue may also be in JRiver (which is a bit complex to manage)
  10:49am
Dean:

See this note on p.114 of the manual: Whether or not each music file can be played back over your network is determined by the network server even if the format of the file is listed above. For example, if you are using Windows Media Player 11, not all music files on the PC are playable. You can play back only those
added to the library of Windows Media Player 11.
  10:49am
Dean:

Nope. Still streaming from a MacBook Air.
  10:50am
Dean:

Again, I don't quite see how the inability to play a particular format, per that note, would result in a default to mp3.

My vintage Synology NAS is still running strong. Their pro-level machines are solid stuff, built to last. Plex keeps the media orderly and accessible. The one hitch is that Backblaze (which I use and like) doesn't make it simple to back up a NAS with a personal account. Miss u, CrashPlan.
