Favoriting The Radio Is Broken with Rich In Washington: Playlist from November 17, 2023 Favoriting

The Radio Is Broken is a three-hour spelunk through the canyons and fissures of humanity's collective unconscious. It sounds as if a field recording of the Culture Industry were a sonic juggernaut barreling down a rickety track—except that tunnel ahead is just painted onto a sheer cliff wall. With occasional forays into what might pass for "normal" music. Prerequisite journey: Cratedigger's Lung

catching up with the chat: indeed I concur that fun 1970s cheap trick is not surpassed by the latter eras. However, agree with UM that there are a few albums throughout the later 90s and 2000s that have some real crunch and candy to ‘em. One that I have enjoyed is that throwback b&w cover and self titled 1997 album. Entirely entertaining without being annoying. Which is more than one can say abt a lot of latter careering bands.

Absolute Randy Newman geek.
Have em ALL. of course his early career speaks for itself. Yet I suggest continuing into 1995-on, he still made stellar albums: Faust (odd concept ‘musical’ album filled with LA all stars etc), Bad Love(1999), Harps & Angels(2008),& Dark Matter(2017)are all magnificent!

Indeed, kinda stunned by the Sparks’ late popularity. So fun & crazy.
Imo, Pet Shops still make stellar albums. A few ups and downs over the years as they dabble with motifs. Nightlife(1999)=is fabu! Fundamental(2006)= i liked it.
Elysium(2012)=strong💪one. I tend to like the ‘introspective’ ones as opposed to the disco bangers(Very). Haven’t listened carefully enough to the latest ones.
Of course Negativland is always out of this world.

in my experience, antique stores don't have interesting records and they usually price them atrociously high. I've had the most luck in smaller mom n' pop thrift stores, if you're fortunate to have any in your town. Goodwill Industries pretty much drove them all out of business where I live and they take most good donated records and sell them in their online outlets.

back circa late 1980s, i was lucky enough to stumble into a super funky & filthy lil record shop in Stamford CT (seemed to be failing) run by a cool cat that didn't really know his inventory all that well (even though there wasn't that much in stock to be perused). Anyway, found abt 5 sealed vinyl copies of Parliament & Funkadelic albums prior to the LP & CD reissues. All the while being semi-plagued by a drunkard breathing down my neck and chatting me up. It was a bit stressful, but worth it! heh heh.
