I wish I remembered. It was probably last year - when I commented about it, someone posted a link to a song they liked from his first album. But it's amusing to me that on WFMU, a show featuring so many popular artists is airing in the middle of the night.

Occasionally we can count on PBS for a counter to pablum programming. Startling to note your first track title as Ukraine 🇺🇦 … The war in Ukraine documentary “20 Days in Mariupol” via the PBS show Frontline is airing tonight. It’s powerful yet unbearable to watch. The pain and suffering is raw and palpable. Echoing the senseless & confounding aspects of man/men waging war on each other, and the horrors of innocents being caught in the crossfire.
Happy Holidays.😱

...a good thing about having not listened to mainstream radio in the 90s is that i never had prejudice about popular bands like radiohead and nirvana. when i finally heard radiohead my introduction was kid a in 1999 via a girlfriend. if that was all they did they'd never have broken through on mainstream radio...but even their mainstream stuff is considerably more sophisticated than what their supposed piers were doing.

This is one of those follow-up albums (like the last Spin Doctors one and, I fear, the next Counting Crows, the Offspring, and Blur records) that I always hope will sound like ten imitations of the one or two great hits of the band's not-so-great previous commercial-breakthrough LP, but instead just proves the band is afraid to be pigeonholed into the only style it's very good at.

I've heard a lot of pop music in the production department at work. Some is abysmal and some is fine and so on, but the worst aspect is repetition. Commercial radio will play the same songs once or twice every single frigging hour.

Relating to deeper cuts of popular artist airing out on WFMU: i appreciate that thrown into the mix.
I was musing earlier abt Rosie Vela’s ‘Zazu’ album (1986), positing that it perhaps is a precedent for Lana del Rey vibes. It’s a worthy revisit. It has major contributions from Donald Fagen & Walter Becker (during their hiatus) Yet, imo Vela holds her own amongst that company. Apparently, Rosie Vela recorded a second album entitled ‘Sun Upon the Altar’ that never got released. 🤷‍♂️

We attended a screening of the Taylor Swift ‘eras’ 3hour concert film. I’m vaguely familiar with a few different albums of hers. Mostly 1989 album and other hits. Yet we were flabbergasted at what an utter ego trip most of the 3hour concert represented. After abt 20 songs, what’s Most disheartening were the repetitive lyrics within a narrow realm of self absorption. I was under the (mis) impression Swift had matured since her late teens/early 20s. We were a bit flabbergasted by all the young women weeping and enthralled by such a shallow extravaganza. It’s certainly a visual experience, in a Las Vegas show vibe. But nowhere near in the realm of say Miranda Lambert, even Madonna, Alanis M, Fiona Apple, Lady Gaga, etc & let alone stellar women icons of the 1970s. Blah blah blah.🤔 🤷‍♂️

oh huh, that's interesting, my ex liked her first album, i don't know where her popinion on swift is now. i was put off by ny times slavish coverage of her every move during tour. i don't know what she's projecting that gets that much attention, but that said some people i respect like her music

Perhaps re-seeing the mindblowing Talking Heads ‘stop making sense’ concert film the week prior colored our Swift impressions. This all too concise 90min concert is the polar opposite. Present, Dropped-in, intimate, connected. The interactions between the music, musicians and singers are positively palpable and enriching. Authentic connecting human vibes. No traces of a performative professionalism that’s gotta be identically repeated Over & Over.

I went to see the new Exorcist film and the bass from the Eras tour film invaded the sound and I thought moments of tension were more present than they were lool

i do not like Swifty's music; but i like and respect HER.
i'm a little frustrated because i feel she's got more open-mindedness, more potential than the redundant high school girl pop she never *really* deviates from, but she doesn't want to topple the empire she's built.

Curios that… I wish Rosie Vela had continued her own wonderful solo recording career with that style & voice of hers !!!

I feel that way about Beyonce until the Renaissance album. she's peeking out of who the empire has demanded up until this point.

my 2nd job is in the middle of the night in a stupidmarket and i hear the store's pa the whole time...get to hear a relentless supply of all these 90s hits recycled and mimicked - i think sometimes by "ai" sometimes by unimaginative new "artists"...technicians.

Appreciate your insights.
Agreed. So much potential there. Yet the 85% of the songs that I tired of hearing left us wondering what are these young folks so worked up about.
Wonde what the upcoming Beyoncé concert film is gonna be all about. ?!
