When we were in Kenya this past July, we tried really hard to find live music like this, or CD/LPs. All we could find (with the help of a guide, no less) were music clubs that played American Disco from around 2000 (and a Gas Station sale of a ripped CD of assorted music from someone's hard drive). When I asked about buying CD's/LPs in a Supermarket, I got blank stares (it wasn't the language), until the person there realized what I meant, and told me, "nobody has these-we download to flash drives)."

I'm an audiophile geek-on my stereo, LPs and CD's sound better than streamed digital music (I Stream WFMU, of course, as the music trumps sound quality concerns). There is non-compresse digital downloads out there these days, even hi-rez versions, and I have some, but haven't been able to get my compuer music to play uncompressed on my stereo rig (I've managed to stream it on the home network, but it seems to automatically compress to mp3, can't figure out how to stop the compression). Then there's back up (which I've neglected, NAS or cloud), and it can all disappear in seconds...

doctorjazz, I am not strict about fidelity. I'll go for lossless if available, but a crappy old 192kbps mp3 will suit me if it's all I can get. I recently transitioned to a 20TB external hard drive, so space is no longer a limitation, so I devour FLACs and WAVs. The 24-bit FLACS, though, seem like real overkill. I would never know the difference. I play my digital files through JRiver's Media Center, and it doesn't impose any kind of compression.

I use JRiver, and it doesn't impose any compression WHEN I LISTEN FROM MY COMPUTER. However, it has a setting to stream over the home network to a streamer connected to a stereo-when I do that, it downconverts everything to mp3. It's likely something I can't find in settings (I tried their help wiki, but wasn't able to fix it).
(I do like those high rez files, though I suspect any change in fidelity has more to do with care in using the best source than the actually bit rate).

Doug Schulkind:

When all the dark clouds roll away
And the sun begins to shine
I see my freedom from across the way
And it comes right in on time
Well it shines so bright and it gives so much light
And it comes from the sky above
Make me feel so free, make me feel like me
And it lights my life with love
And it seems like and it feels like
And it seems like, yes it feels like
A brand new day
A brand new day
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I was lost and double crossed
With my hands behind my back
I was long-time hurt and thrown in the dirt
Shoved out on the railroad track
I've been used, abused and so confused
And I didn't have nowhere to run
But I stood and looked
And my eyes got hooked
On that beautiful morning sun
And it seems like, yes it feels like
And it seems like, oh yes it feels like
A brand new day
A brand new day
Yeah, yeah
And the sun shines down all on the ground
Yeah, and the grass is oh so green
And my heart is still and I've got the will
And I don't really feel so mean
Here it comes, here it comes
Here it comes right now
And it comes right in on time
Well it eases me and it pleases me
And it satisfies my mind
And it seems like, yes it feels like
And it seems like, yes it feels like
A brand new day
A brand new day
Yeah, yeah, yeah
A brand new day
Seems like a brand new day
Feels like a brand new day
Seems like a brand new day
Feels like a brand new day
Seems like a brand new day

Hi Doug and Drumizens! Just finished installing a celiing fan in a house with century-old wiring -- more fun than a human should be allowed to have. And my email got hacked Tuesday! Yippee!!

Doug has a 20 TB hard drive-can collect a bit of music on that...
(The music on the stream, when no live shows are on, are from Doug's hard drive, if I remember correctly).

I listen to the Drummer Stream many mornings, while I'm getting ready for work. Great stuff (seems to organize a bit, jazz sets, South African sets, blues, country, etc), it's great for my early morning prep!

I too am a fan in that way, Dr. J. Up before dawn, at my keyboard, w/ Doug's astonishing algo giving me 40s country, some southeast Asian pieces, free jazz, and I never know what next. Love it so.
Thanks for that, Doug.
