A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Basic overviews of the mission:

Austin Rich:

The mission ran from November 14th to November 24th, 1969. Originally, the 12 mission was to be the "back-up" plan, in case Apollo 11 didn't make it to the moon and back. But the success of the 11 mission caused all subsequent Apollo missions to be a little more "relaxed" than before. 12 was delayed so the crew could undergo more "geologic" training, which would allow them to collect better samples from the moon's surface that could be more telling about the moon's history.

I used to know more about these missions, but I will admit: I'm not as well versed as I was when I was 15. I should do some research and get to know these missions a little better. There's so much documentation out now, and you can really get granular about the different aspects of the missions.

I found one YouTube video by a scientist who spent his career studying the onboard computer used on the Apollo 11 Mission. It was a great video, but it does illustrate: how much we now know about these missions I couldn't have known as a kid.

My big accomplishment recently: I got on the exercise bike two days in a row. Can I make it three, tomorrow? Who can say...

I was thinking about trying to adopt some sort of "show" that I watch while I ride... but I'm not sure what that would be, so I've just been listening to the radio instead.

Not to mention the podcast Heather Z and I do.

I guess if I had a real job, I would do that instead. But I don't, so I just sell rare books and make music and radio.

It's better than hard drugs or moutain climbing?

When you fly to SxSW from the west coast, you often have a layover in Houston. I was very excited, as a NASA nerd, to get to spend a little time in Houston, in addition to my SxSW trip.

Let's just say it's a very disappointing city, no matter what you are expecting.
  🎸 12:15am
Heather Z:

Ah, I'd listen to these NASA guys read the phone book. Which is basically what they're doing, I guess!

There's something about how boring it all is... and... how much is riding on all of it.

I was cracking a joke but it's sincerely fascinating and I've always been a little in awe. It does sound like the phone book to me but it's just a language I don't understand.

It's like sailors taking measurements, in a way. But both "Houston" and the 12 Capsule are relaying info back and forth, so they can make changes in real time.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:22am
Austin Rich:

I think the bulk of these recordings are from the return trip, after they have been on the moon. I believe the return capsule was named, "The Yankee Clipper," but I could be wrong.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:25am
Austin Rich:

Apollo 12 was a "splashdown" style mission, so they landed in the Pacific Ocean, were transported to Hawaii, and then ultimately returned to the Airforce Base outside of Houston on the 29th of November.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:28am
Austin Rich:

As with most missions that actually get to the moon, Apollo 12 left behind plenty of garbage, too. Here's a list of all the stuff that we have left behind on the moon:

It's like you know that I saved that article about how much human poo is on the moon.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:34am
Austin Rich:

I sort of get angry when I think about all the garbage in space / on the moon. If I was a billlionaire, forget all this "colonizing Mars." You wanna impress me? Clean up the moon!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:37am
Aitch:

Imagine the disappointment when some much later mission collects some samples of it instead of actual moon rocks.
  🎸 12:37am
Heather Z:

↳ Austin Rich @12:34
I agree. How dare we?! It should be like camping in a way. Take nothing but pictures and moon rocks and samples, leave nothing but footprints.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:38am
Austin Rich:

I know I've told this story before, but: my grandmother, aunt, mother, and now sister, all worked / work for Boeing. My Grandmother worked on the NASA Projects that came in, and got to be the tool manager for the lunar rover projects, and the rover she worked on is still on the moon. I hope it still works, because someone cleaning up that moon will need some wheels.

After the archives and data are obliterated.... "human poo on the moon! They LIVED here!" Ah, no. We're just litterbugs.
