I love it when recordings of live performances capture the audience's presence and reaction to the music. I remember once going to see Dexter Gordon at the famed Village Vanguard in NYC, and the date was being recorded for release. The producer, Bob Porter, hit the stage before the musicians to admonish the audience to keep quiet. I thought that was absolute chickenshit.

I was thinking the same thing. It's a bit weird to think of people chatting through "the greatest live jazz recording."
That said, I read Paul Motian interviewed about this and the fact that audiences are quieter now, and he said, "I think I liked it better in the old days."

Which brings to mind the hilarity of Charles Mingus asking the audience to keep the ice in their glasses and the cashier to keep the cash register quiet on the fake live recording Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus. It was recorded in a studio, but he pretended that it was live.

Didn't Uncle Michael do a marathon premium of fake live recordings?

There are fake live recordings, and then there are recordings that incorporate the sound of groups of people cheering or talking, "Nubian Sundance" on Weather Report's Mysterious Traveller, for instance.

Not feeling well, UM? Nuts!

I have a bootleg LP of the Beatles live at Dodger Stadium. Pretty sure it's true live.

A fellow student in library school, UCLA, late '80s, turned me onto this WSQ album along with Song X, Metheny and Ornette.
