The Radio Is Broken is a three-hour spelunk through the canyons and fissures of humanity's collective unconscious. It sounds as if a field recording of the Culture Industry were a sonic juggernaut barreling down a rickety track—except that tunnel ahead is just painted onto a sheer cliff wall. With occasional forays into what might pass for "normal" music. Prerequisite journey: Cratedigger's Lung

From the Bandcamp page notes:
Evan Parker made his first trip to North America as a performer in the fall of 1978 touring solo in the US and Canada. His landmark solo record Monoceros had been recorded in April. This is a recording of his first solo performance in New York City. While it may lack the sonic fidelity of Monoceros, its raw passion makes a statement to the New York audiences lucky to have been at Environ that October evening.

my GOP siblings are now being nice to me, it's weird, and i'll take it. but I think it has to do w/ my father effing them over and the trauma w/ our mother being in a memory care center.

The thing about the COVID (and flu) vaccines is that they don't immediately make you immune, it takes about 4-6 weeks. That's why the best time for a flu shot is actually October; it's processed and working by the time the flu season begins.

I had so much fun I stayed almost twice as long as I planned. I was in nerd heaven. I had a list of all books in adult non-fiction that hadn't been circulated in 5+ years. I had to check to see if they were in the big Core Collection book (which I didn't even know was a thing!), if they were on the shelf, not on the shelf, or on the bottom shelf. While in the stacks, of course I moved books that were mis-shelved. And I didn't have to talk to any patrons!

Wendy, I worked for well over a decade at a public library, perhaps the greatest job and employer ever. Your project is often very overdue. On the other hand, there are some old, arguably outdated books that one should *never* discard. Sigfried Giedion's works of architectural theory come to mind. They need to be retained just in case...

My stress level due to technology fuck-ups is life-endangering. I spend part of each and every day thanking god or anybody that Steve Jobs is dead. I despise Sir Tim Berners-Lee for his stupid, Vanenvar Bush-like science-fictiony Web.

I welcome a challenge, so it being really hard was what pulled me right in. If I'm not learning, I'm bored and sad. So, yeah, continuous professional development is my thing. So is working behind the scenes, making systems work well for all who use them. NERD POWER!

There are varieties of "working with the public." Retail is awful. I worked in a record store, had a blast, but fucking hated the brain-dead idiots whose refrain was, "Lemme check out that bong." The store had paraphernalia. Under my breath, I'm like, "This isn't a library, asshole. You can't check it out." But libraries are different. People visit with real needs for which "the market" hasn't supplied anything satisfying. It remains a true service ethos. (Back in the '90s, "libraries should operate like Nordstrom" was all the rage. It pissed me off. Nordstrom should operate like libraries.)

Here in VT, one of our colleges got a new president and he threatened to close its library. You shoulda seen the outrage. Students, especially, were PISSED. I think the schmuck ended up walking back his proposal. He's some corporate dickwad.

Hi, Rich & Radiobroken!

Been listening in since the start. Thanks for that last set! Always enjoy hearing post-punk & emerging artists that were present around that critical time at the turn of the 80's, when I first discovered alternative rock. But I hadn't yet begun listening to college & public-owned stations until 2 years later when i first discovered WHTG.

I love it! In VT, the certificate I'm doing qualifies one to work in or direct any public library in the state. It's an equalizer, but also a way to professionalize our little rural libraries. And yes, we need more people dedicated to the ethos of access for all, and the importance of public works, and not just every bit of new shiny tech bullshit.

it was weird, my brothers in their 30s, had gay friends (had one stay on their couch for 8 months) and took me to a gay soccer bar, but after Biden, all of the sudden, they became anti-trans. but I saw it was b/c they saw themselves as the alphas around the their friends, and had to keep up appearances (hello, hyacinthe). once they accepted me as an intelligent person again to be trusted, and I punched holes in their lack of argument, i got them away from their previous postition.

On this subject, there's up to 3 freight lines that run through my town. The southernmost line is the Lehigh Valley freight line, which is the one line in our town that the locals have serious concerns about. At one crossing on that line where a major traffic route runs across, traffic is often forced to a stop whenever freight trains attempt to turn onto a branch line to unload cargo at a nearby industrial facility. It can be quite a nuisance for drivers who end up getting caught at such moments. Add to that the fact that a major intersection lies at least a mere ten feet away, which creates a clear hazard for anyone getting unexpectedly caught stopped at the crossing whenever traffic often builds up in the weekday evening hours. Another crossing on the same line presents a similar hazard, lying close to an intersection where the road makes a sharp turn at the crossing. An incident occurred at that crossing just 2 years ago where someone was killed by a passing train.

Correction to my previous comment:
The line with the issues I mentioned was the Reading line. Lehigh Valley runs further north of town, at the south end of my neighborhood.

Oh, contraire, ngh. I used to attend a remarkable series in LA, The Green Umbrella, that featured new music, ranging from Bartok to world premieres. The audience included a number of elderly folks including the philanthropist Betty Freeman, as in Cage's Freeman Etudes.

"Wealthy dowagers"...good lord, Freeman was wealthy. She turned to me, then a relative youngster, at a Green Umbrella show, to ask if we had met recently at a party. Needless to say, I wasn't a denizen of her circles. She not only did not disapprove, she put her money where her mouth was and promoted new music.

I’m literally at a massive RailRoad X-ing Now! In WRJ (white river junction VT) and the train is an endless cargo type.
I sawer the Daily Show as well - & am getting the heebeegeebees !
Earlier tonight - I had to run across the blinking tracks to get to a theatrical event (a theatrical version of a radio play = fabulous show!) cause I was running very late. Otherwise I woulda had to wait over 10mins.
…. I looked both ways. 😜

I've still not seen Spinal Tap but I've heard The Troggs Tapes several times as well as read a transcript of the tape.

Ah-haha! Terri T was the first to play this on Cherry Blossom Clinic.
I was just thinking this would fit nicely on on a "Celebrities At Their Worst" comp!

I think what Ralph put out was a album comp of his Canadian stuff....discogs has it listed but I always doubted it actually came out, it seemed like it was 'upcoming' in status up until the end...
