Cage the Elephant  2024   Favoriting Thank You Happy Birthday  Jive /Relentless Records  2011  Apparently this song dates back to Nov 18, 2010, when it was made a free download on Filter magazine's website. It's from Cage the Elephant's 2nd album, which purportedly "was heavily influenced by punk rock as well as bands such as Pixies and Nirvana." //// "The album was originally announced in July 2009 when the band had stated that they would release it in early 2010 with the title Computer Says Move. The group had recorded over eighty songs but shelved all of them when they realized that "nobody was really into" any of the ideas. The group then took ideas that they had saved for "side projects" and decided to use those songs for the album, which was then given the current title. The band once again worked with Jay Joyce, who had helped them record their first album. The band had trouble recording the songs, with lead singer Matt Shultz, in particular, having trouble finding the inspiration to write the lyrics for songs such as "Flow." The group was able to work out twelve songs for the album, stating: "We want each of our songs to sound like it's been written by a different band.""    0:00:00 (Pop-up)

Self Improvement  Self Improvement   Favoriting Visible Damage  Self Released  2021  "Long Beach CA's SELF IMPROVEMENT's first album perfects the classic post-punk deal so ideally that you might think an algorithm created it. It’s got a bass and drum combo that you could set an atomic clock to, a guitar that can turn from skittery to overpowering on a dime, and a disaffected singer who sounds about as bored as a human being can be before suddenly launching into an impassioned roar. It’s absolutely fantastic stuff, easily better than a certain couple of bands that do something similar to far more praise and media hype."    0:06:56 (Pop-up)
Jim E. Brown  I'm An Obese Alcoholic   Favoriting Broken  Jim E. Brown  2021  Born 1 day before 9/11, Manchester UK's Jim E. Brown debuted as a 19 year old alcoholic who is obese, and has many degenerative and chronic conditions. He leads a miserable life full of self loathing and shares this information with us via his unique brand of outsider synthpop. Also he may be a 41 year old from Pittsburgh or Philly, depending on who you talk to.    0:08:20 (Pop-up)
Kelley Stoltz  I Wanna Sleep   Favoriting Hard Feelings  Chuffed  2019  Kelley Stoltz is an American singer, songwriter and musician. He currently resides in San Francisco. His music has been compared to that of Brian Wilson,Velvet Underground, Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen. He has had a long indie career with interesting projects such as a track by track cover album of Crocodile by Echo and the Bunnyment, a few release on Sub Pop, touring with Raconteurs, relasing on Third Man and Castle Face, touring with Ezra Furman...and generally doing cool shit. He's also very eco consicious. His album "Below the Branches" was the first record in history to make an on-package claim about renewable energy use with the Green-e logo. Stoltz tracked his electricity use and with the help of the Green-e program, offset all the electricity used to record his record with green tags from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. In Kelley's words: “Using renewable energy to offset the electricity I needed to power my guitar amps and my recording machines was a simple and effective way for me to do something about my impact on the environment. Green-e certifies that I am buying 100 percent renewable energy. Hopefully, people will see their logo; check into what they do, and make renewable energy a part of their lives, too."    0:11:33 (Pop-up)
The PoPo  I Feel Mysterious Today   Favoriting The PoPo  Buddyhead Records  2006  The PoPo are one of those unicorn bands, a quartet of mustachio'd hipsters that released one fine album of forward looking postpunk during the nu/rave sleaze rock heyday and then just disappeared into the ether forever. They were from Philly. They claim to have invented "post hip hop" by fusing postpunk/world music/lo fi electronics with a declamatory spoken word delivery. I would swear that this could also be Julian Casablancas just taking the piss. They played a CMJ showcase, and that is all. But we have this. Key resolution takeaway: Be less paranoid and more mysterious in 2024.    0:13:50 (Pop-up)

Then, because of her cultural background, she left everything behind. 10 years later, with a master’s degree in economics and engineering and some work experience, she decided to make a drastic change and dedicate herself to art and music. "I work mostly with strong emotions and try to transfer them into music. I have never thought about creating a mood but that’s what happens automatically, I guess. Snövit  Fitness   Favoriting 1992  TV FEH  2023  Snövit (Snow White) aka SNX has in a short time become the biggest underground rapper in Sweden. With his iconic look, 7 released albums on his own company, TV FEH, millions of streams and infamous live shows, Snövit has managed to create a cult following in Sweden with dedicated rap fans who are curious about the dirty reality that Snövit tells in his lyrics and on his beats. Snövit's music and style stand out like a sharp knife and are the outsider of the Swedish hip hop scene who continues to push the boundaries of what modern hip hop can and may be. Going to a live show and watching Snövit perform together with the rest of TV FEH is like going to a modern underground punk show with big moshpits, loud noises and wild pubilk and lots of headbanging.    0:21:33 (Pop-up)

The Fall  Eat Y'Self Fitter   Favoriting Perverted By Language (Expanded Edition)  Rough Trade + Castle/Sanctuary  1983 / 2005  The opening track from the first album to feature (in part) Brix E Smith, Mark's 1st wife, at that time still newlywed. Many many notes on this one from Annotated Fall (website) - Eat Y'Self Fitter... Including this key note: "Eat Yourself Fitter" is a slogan used to sell Kellogg's All-Bran breakfast cereal. This particular ad campaign seems to have begun sometime prior to 1982: ""The TV campaign for All-Bran, in area test at the time, went national from July 1982" //// From Obsession fanzine, interview with MES at Reading University, 15 October 1983: INTERVIEWER: 'EAT YOURSELF FITTER'??? ARE YOU ATTACKING HEALTH FOOD FREAKS (laughter in the background) //// -MARK E. SMITH:- Its like a journal, really. A very 'me' journal, all sorts of things I had a go at on that. //// INTERVIEWER: YOU DIDN'T GET THE NAME OFF THE BACK OF AN 'ALL BRAN' PACKET? //// BRIX:- No. //// MARK E. SMITH:- I didn't write it like that, no, I'd never seen that until I'd written the song, I must have seen the television advert or som'at to get the name, I thought it was a unique name, strange that, isn't it? Dean Wean Group  Excercise Man   Favoriting The Deaner Album  Schnitzel Records / ATO Records  2016  "Far from running away from the persona of Dean Ween -- the stage name adopted when he was a teenager -- guitarist/singer Mickey Melchiondo runs straight into it, christening his first-post Ween project the Dean Ween Group and naming their debut record The Deaner Album. Like Freeman, the 2014 debut album by his partner Aaron Freeman -- the duo were separated when Melchiondo wrote and recorded the material for this 2016 album but reunited by the time it was released -- The Deaner Album illustrates precisely what Melchiondo brought to Ween...namely, much of the band's brown sound. Designed as a showcase for Melchiondo's guitar playing -- there are three instrumentals scattered throughout the album, two named explicitly after idols Dickey Betts (the Allman Brothers Band) and Garry Shider (Parliament-Funkadelic) -- The Deaner Album does provide plenty of examples of his six-string prowess, including the clean, lively picking of "Shwartze Pete." The title of that song also suggests how often The Deaner Album trades in cheerful vulgarity, a practice that can't help but recall classic Ween. Often, the album takes detours into madness: the hyperkinetic novelty "Exercise Man" sets the album off to a frenzied start, while "Gum," a de facto sequel to "Candy," provides a garish counterpoint to the heavy rock that surrounds it. None of these thick rockers sound alike: "Charlie Brown" is a swirling circle of doom, "I'll Take It and Break It" punishes with its stomping riff, "Bums" races along, while "Nightcrawler" revels in its menacing depravity. All this makes The Deaner Album sound a little excessive but there are also moments of madcap pop ("Bundle of Joy," "You Were There"), twisted country ("Tammy"), and funk ("Mercedes Benz"), all parceled out with expert pacing, so the album plays like a drunken, giddy party."    0:50:27 (Pop-up)

Escape-Ism  Rome Wasn't Burnt In A Day   Favoriting The Lost Record  Radical Elite  2021  Escape-ism is the Found-Sound-Dream-Drama starring Ian Svenonius & Sandi Denton. n the music world, a “Lost Record” is the term for an LP that was passed over, unappreciated – maybe not even released – but is later discovered, unearthed, and celebrated by in-the-know tastemakers and canny connoisseurs. Many of our culture’s favorite records are “Lost” records; once despised or unheard, they’re now in heavy rotation in the clubhouse and in the car. Indeed, every group or musician dreams of making such a seminal record, with the heroic underdog narrative of: 1). Initial rejection by philistines 2). Clueless mishandling by the record company 3). An aimless amble through the desert of neglect and finally 4). Rediscovery and veneration However, the process a record has to go through to be “lost”– and then found again – is arduous. Its also quite risky, since most lost records are really just lost; tossed aside and forgotten forever. HE LOST RECORD is a classic, destined to bewitch the minds, hearts and dancing shoes of any rock ’n’ roll fan who happens to discover it, for as long as such creatures exist. Without the high octane hype-machine of the mind-control minstrels who hypnotize the hapless through the mass-media, THE LOST RECORD is bound for inevitable obscurity, but – with its timeless tunes, poignant message, and innovative sound – rediscovery and immortal status is equally assured! The LOST RECORD, being what it is, has enormous selling potential. Music enthusiasts will be thrilled to be the ones clever and kind enough to have rescued this platter from oblivion    1:01:57 (Pop-up)
Conditioner Disco Group  Let The Energy Return   Favoriting CDGLP  Maternal Voice  2019  Portland based Conditioner Disco Group play treble heavy, rhythm punk meandering occasionally into dub territory. Ref: E.S.G, 80's midwest punk, weirdo-pop, Liquid Liquid and PiL. Maternal Voice, the Stockholm/Manchester record label is the new home of Conditioner Disco Group. Their peers include the lo-fi Leipzig post-wave band Marauder and techno-noise group, Errant Monks. onditioner Disco Group certainly have some sort of ‘condition’, and rarely fall on the side of ‘disco’, however, they’re most definitely a ‘group’. Do not approach this band with any pre-conceived notion as to who they may be, instead, you should experience the sardonic rhythms and occasional dub distortion for yourself and try and see if you can figure them out.    1:04:59 (Pop-up)
Morning Morning  I Breathe Air   Favoriting HOT WET BRAIN  Morning Morning  2019  Morning Morning are a two piece puzzle of musical jenga. They play a distinct brand of artisanal psychedelia that blends lamenting guitar with percussive drum webs. Known for their diversity and energy on stage, the two piece have a full bodied and distinct energetic sound. Fun Fact: The term "wet brain" is not scientifically valid, but refers to a very real condition known as Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. This chronic brain syndrome is caused by long-term alcoholism and is accompanied by a triad of symptoms: Mental Disturbance. Confusion, Drowsiness and Paralysis of Eye Movements.    1:07:49 (Pop-up)
Lawn  Diets (I've Decided To Keep On Trying)   Favoriting Blood on the Tracks  Forged Artifacts  2018  Naming your debut album Blood on the Tracks is a bold move, especially when it shares almost nothing in common with Bob Dylan’s landmark album of the same name. If there’s any comparisons to make, both albums share an honesty and rawness that’s straight to the point. Taking cues from post-punk pioneers like Wire and Gang of Four, as well as Britpop acts Suede and Blur, Lawn attempt to forge a new path for themselves. Their new album Blood on the Tracks isn’t just jangly guitar lines and NME obsession; it’s actually lighthearted indie-rock that’s blissfully unaware of how intricate it truly is. The record is primarily comprised of minimalist song structures that slowly bloom, eventually revealing themselves to the world in a multitude of shapes and sizes...ranging from post punk sounds to shimmering serene vocals...polarity attempts to pull the album in two different directions, and it’s what makes Blood on the Tracks such a unique album.    1:12:09 (Pop-up)
Moderate Rebels  Soul Eats The Fear   Favoriting For Your Sustainable Development  Everyday Life Recordings  2023  Recently released at the end of 2023, this track harkens back to Love and Rocket's dark psychedelia. Of their fourth album, the MR collective say, “We’re proud of it, it feels generally optimistic, hopefully fairly good humoured, and obviously we think it’s the best thing we’ve done so far... lots of pentatonic droning on synths and guitars, meets our below conscious level minimal words slogany thing, bits of hypnotic chanting... and what’s it all about? Good question, you can tell us...”. Recorded in Margate, Tufnell Park, South Bermondsey and Gravesend, with regular contributors Mo, Kate, David, Charlie, Emma and Kevin, this new album continues Moderate Rebels interest in "how ambiguous language and it's associated vague ideas are used by wannabe authoritarians, and looking for multiple simultaneous meanings, articulating both internal and external reactions" "Musically it seems we're always looking for some hypnotic elevation and a feeling of rousing spirit, whether that's arising out of gallows humour, or just playing with a sonic style ('Celtic Cosmiche' ? 'Shoegaze Disko'?) that we haven't personally explored before. We'd like to think that with each song, we've got to something that's not on any other Moderate Rebels album" “We don’t write the songs, the songs write us,” say the group. “We enjoy mucking around with music until things happen, and sometimes that’s quick to become a song, or sometimes it just ends up as a fun moment for us, only in memory. We can’t conclusively answer questions about what it is, because we control nothing about it. We enjoy the process, though. If it wasn’t a buzz, we wouldn’t do it”.  *   1:16:42 (Pop-up)
Kate Birch  Perfect Equality and Peace Among People   Favoriting The Fool  Red Brick Records  2022  Facing the world naked, without the emotional burden of patterns which we have outgrown. Moving beyond the ego to embrace unconditional love. These aspirations comprise the heart of Kate Birch’s new album The Fool. The music is recorded and produced all by herself and arranged purely with violin, synth and drum samples. The result is a dense sound along with her voice, which reminds us of Björk, Jenny Hval or This Is The Kit. Birch’s (aka Laura Schuler) inventive and emotive music is bolstered by her background as a violinist, conservatory-trained in Switzerland and Scandinavia.    1:20:54 (Pop-up)

Deerhoof  Phase-Out All Remaining Non-Miracles By 2028   Favoriting Miracle-Level  Joyful Noise Recordings  2023  "Recorded in single takes with minimal overdubs, the San Francisco band’s latest album—its first sung entirely in Satomi Matsuzaki’s native Japanese—is a confident set of small epiphanies. //// Since forming almost three decades ago in pre-dotcom San Francisco, Deerhoof have been some of indie rock’s most effective ambassadors for the power of anarchic creativity. A sense of mischievous delight is never far from the controlled chaos of their intricate melodies, zig-zagging rhythms, and unpredictable song structures, whose admirers have included Radiohead and ?uestlove as well as not-so-famous kindred spirits like John Dwyer and Wendy Eisenberg. Nowadays scattered across different cities, the current quartet, intact since 2008—bassist/singer Satomi Matsuzaki, drummer Greg Saunier, and guitarists Ed Rodriguez and John Dieterich—has continued to gamely experiment without losing that prankster merriment, whether espousing radical change, going full concept record, or ushering in multi-genre collaborators. //// Deerhoof are at both their most whimsical and most energetically approachable on Miracle-Level, their 19th LP. Billed as the first Deerhoof album written entirely in Matsuzaki’s native Japanese, it is also the first to be recorded from start to finish in a proper studio. The album was produced by Mike Bridavsky, better known as the “dude” of the late online-celebrity cat Lil Bub, but Deerhoof’s air-quotes “studio debut” doesn’t so much smooth their scruffy charm as sharpen it up. Concentrating only on songs that could be done in one live take, with minimal overdubs but ridiculously lavish guitar textures, it’s a confident set of tiny epiphanies. //// With bass synth, cowbell, and circuitous twists and turns, “Phase-Out All Remaining Non-Miracles by 2028” calls for the magical-realist goal it states in its title, but ends on a fantastically optimistic note for humanity: When it comes to “non-miracles,” the translated lyrics read, “Luckily there aren’t that many.” //// Miracle-Level celebrates the heady euphoria that can result when skill and craft meet with serendipity and happy accidents, like a long-running indie band teaming up with the former owner of Lil Bub and hustling out a full album in two weeks’ studio time. “The idea that an artist even knows what they’re doing … I think it’s a lie,” Saunier said in a recent podcast interview. “It’s an illusion that we tell ourselves for the purpose of making selling the record easier. We dumb it down to a blurb.” A melody doesn’t have to have a meaning, it just is. Or, as Saunier told another recent interviewer, “Generosity, creativity, and love are just as much human nature as competition, coercion, and brutality.”" --- Ooooh... And look! There's a video, too!!! -- Deerhoof - Phase-Out All Remaining Non-Miracles by 2028 (Official Video)    1:50:13 (Pop-up)

HOUSE Of ALL  Aim Higher   Favoriting Continuum  Tiny Global Recordings  2024  Martin Bramah & other era ex-members of The Fall have revealed their new album, 'Continuum'; this track "Aim Higher" from it is now available; as are pre-orders in all the usual various formats...https://houseofall.bandcamp.com/ "Martin Bramah moved back to Manchester [with] an idea to form a band of former Fall musicians. He rang Marc Riley, the 6 Music DJ and early Fall member, but Riley told him he didn’t play music any more. Another ex-Fall guitarist, Craig Scanlon, said the same. Classic-era bassist Steve Hanley and his drumming brother Paul were interested, but Bramah was all set to shelve the idea when by chance he bumped into mid-period Fall drummer Simon Wolstencroft, aka Funky Si, who he’d barely seen since they played together during Bramah’s second spell in the group in 1990. “I thought, ‘Two drummers!’ Then it started to come together.” //// The final piece of the House Of All jigsaw was Pete Greenway, a younger guitarist who spent eight years in The Fall prior to singer Mark E Smith’s death... The group represents the entire lifespan of The Fall from 1976 to 2018, though Greenway had never met the others before. In fact, they only had one initial meeting before going straight into the studio to record their debut album. As Greenway puts it, “I was intrigued by the idea of just turning up, plugging in and seeing what happened.” //// Bramah – who still also fronts Blue Orchids, and in some ways is as mercurial and wilful a character as Smith – had some strong ideas for House Of All. There would be no Fall songs or attempts to replicate the sound, though he did want to recreate Smith’s way of working: a pressurised environment where music could be conjured up on the spot. “Some of the best [Fall] moments were improvised,” says Bramah. “That was the element I was interested in recapturing.” //// Their shared history seems to have produced a weird, pan-generational chemistry. “It could have been lousy,” admits Paul Hanley, “but having all been in The Fall made us able to do it.” //// In January 2023, their debut single “Harlequin Duke” was released on the internet to a very positive response – other than from the Smith estate, who released a statement saying they found House Of All “extremely offensive and very misleading to the wider audience of Mark E Smith and The Fall”. The ruckus didn’t last – the family’s principal objection was to the “Fall family continuum” tag, which the band have since stopped using – but Bramah insists they’re “honouring what Mark taught us”." -- One year onwards, here they are releasing an album called "Continuum". Perhaps they are set on getting the last laugh, afterall.  *   1:57:51 (Pop-up)

" But there was one fated moment when Cage the Elephant came to be.

“We were in Knoxville, Tennessee, hanging outside a club after a show—this is probably in 2006—and we saw this guy with a shaved head and a long goatee yelling and screaming and talking to himself,” Shultz recounted. “I’m pretty sure he had some mental issues going on. He all of a sudden beelined towards us. Everyone jumped into our car and shut the doors. But I didn’t make it into the car. I was stuck outside. I thought for sure the guy was gonna stab me or something, but then he came up to me and gave me a hug. The whole time he was saying, ‘You have to cage the elephant, you have to cage the elephant.’ Afterward, I was like, ‘We gotta name the band that.’”

And so they did."

An elephant joke is a joke cycle, almost always an absurd riddle or conundrum and often a sequence of such, that involves an elephant. Elephant jokes were a fad in the 1960s, with many people constructing large numbers of them according to a set formula. Sometimes they involve parodies or puns

Prolific science fiction writer Isaac Asimov was of the opinion that these jokes are "favorites of youngsters and of unsophisticated adults".However, he finds one joke uncharacteristically sophisticated enough to include in his book of favorite jokes. The joke was told in the aftermath of the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Ruby, who had walked into Dallas police headquarters carrying a gun:

Q: What did the Dallas chief of police say when the elephant walked into the police station?
A: Nothing! He didn't notice

G-O-H-O-H-O-9-O
H-O-9-O-G-O-H-O (10)...
10. These obscure lines possibly refer to computer keys. They may have just been floating around, too--in the Blue Lyrics Book, MES includes a piece called "Amsterdam," which reads, in part:

CUT!!
The Amsterdam Office
Bertlan Van Diggaboom;
"Print!"
"We know what we want!"
Printed
"G.O.H.O.F. unplot"
"On G.O.H.O."
"Lets service and recall"
"And Plus Power"
"Newline Answer"
"We want.............."|
Cut!!

Zack has discovered that MES read this on his 1983 Greenwich Sound Radio Creatures What You Never Knew About appearance (along with one "Centimeter Square," see note 12).

14. "Mit dem" means "with the..." in German, with the definite article "dem" in the masculine dative case. At times Smith is likely saying "victim," and there may also be a pun on "amid them." In the video to the song from Perverted by Language Bis, at 5:29 (about 5:29 and a half, really) the screen displays the words "don't wanna be a victim (MIT DEM)" (thanks to Dan).

Clay refers us to the Varukers' "I Don't Want to Be a Victim," which came out in 1982 ("Eat Y'Self Fitter" debuted on March 21, 1983).
