↳ Song: ""The Prize Fight Fix"" by "Rocky Fortune"
There will be a couple of features of this episode that will be unique to this particular story, as it will include a couple elements from the "AFRS" version of this show. (Armed Forces Radio Service.) I'll point them out when we get there.

Rocky Fortune was very popular on AFRS, and ran for years and years on their airwaves. So the official AFRS versions of this show were slightly different than the regular versions.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Austin Rich:

I've mentioned this before, but it's been a while, so I'll mention this again: "Rocky Fortune" was written by one of the script adapters for "X-Minus One," and both shows were for NBC. So some of the backing music, and incidental music, that they use for Rocky Fortune are commonly heard sound cues on NBC... and therefore, on X-Minus One, too.

Certainly, Rocky Fortune was part of Franks efforts to rehabilitate his reputation, as a skinny and weak crooner, who ladies loved because he was sensitive. You'll notice: no singing in Rocky Fortune, in spite of being asked to do so. He was hoping to cultivate a "tough guy" image, which he honed with his future Hollywood and music endeavors.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
Austin Rich:

Since Frank's later reputation was for his movies and his singing, and since this radio show was so popular on AFRS, a lot of listeners expected him to sing on this show, since there were a couple examples of dramatic shows with singing in them, too. So the AFRS versions of Rocky Fortune often contained one of Frank's hits edited into the show, to meet this expectation. And, since most Rocky Fortune shows ran short without commercials, adding a song for AFRS served another function, too. This particular episode tonight was archived twice by OTR nerds, so I've included the song that was common in the AFRS version here.

I was very lucky one day when out of the blue, Tony Bennet entered our floor (I worked at Nickelodeon in Times Square, the MTV building) and I just happened to be walking by as he entered. I was heading to the kitchenette area and fortunately so was he. I quickly said hello and thanked him for his music. Then I asked him, “what was the first record that couldn’t get enough of?”. He paused for a second to think and then replied, “I think it was Mel Torme and the Meltones”. He really praised his singing. I told him that I was going to run across the street to the Virgin Megastore and buy that record. It was thrill to meet him and I did go across the street to get the record but of course it wasn’t in stock. I ordered it online and got it a few weeks later. Good stuff!

Hi Yerfriendpaul! Tony Bennett had a goth contingent here in town, not even oddly, and lawn seats at the amphitheater weren't too.costly back then. He would even do the drop the mic down and project into the outdoor stands and we could hear him loud and clear. In maybe.... 2003? My folks took me and my friend Sarah to see him at the Eastman Theater. I'll never forget how nice that was of them and they loved the show, too.

You'll notice this X-Minus One episodes is very short. X-Minus One would occasionally air a very short episode, and then others would be nearly 30 minutes. I think it depended on when they had sponsors, and whatnot. This might be the shortest episode they aired.
