A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Scott Muni was the program director and main DJ at New York's most popular album-oriented, proto-freeform radio station WNEW. Later to be known as Classic Rock, but they got adventurous. WCBS was one of the first oldies stations beginning in the early 70s. Everything from early RnB, Doo-Wop onward.

Sam Phillips is up next, and both he and Elvis were inducted in '86. Not sure I care enough to get mad about their inclusion; they really did have a huge impact on rock music. Found this clip, out of context, on YouTube. Couldn't track down where it came from, but I'm sure it was from some documentary. (Maybe that 90's "Dancin' in the Streets / Rock and Roll" Doc made by BBC / PBS?)

Again, a pretty ridiculous, overblown monologue that cracks me up. Some of these guys really could bluster about the importance of Elvis...

The Everly Brothers are fine. This might be the first time I've every played them. I don't hate them, but... were they essential for year one of this project? Wanda Jackson should have gotten this slot, definately.

Mrs Fab and I visited Sun Studios , late '90s. Sam Philips was still alive. Amazing how much history came out of what is basically a pretty small room. An incredibly humble space. Hardly some giant Space-Age cutting-edge studio.
