Is there anything more brutal than a modern LIU campus building? And yet, cater-corner around that same block you'll find this fine edifice, still standing (and with the interior theatre largely intact) -- cinematreasures.org...

Hi

Concrete (the noun) can be brutal. I work next door to an infamous Brutalist building, the architecture building at UC Berkeley. I happen to like it, but it's famously despised in these parts.

perhaps unconsciously, brutalism refers to the economics of the 70's and the costs of architecture in that type of economic environment

I am often wary of being pulled into the circuits of Gospel. I would never leave, so I avoid it, but when Reid's closed in Berkeley a few years ago, I showed up to make a purchase. They were at the time the oldest extant record store in California. Mostly Gospel.

re: brutalism and it's economic underpinnings..
"In the United Kingdom, brutalism was featured in the design of utilitarian, low-cost social housing influenced by socialist principles and soon spread to other regions around the world, most notably Eastern Europe."

In 1920–1921 he worked alongside the union activist Mary Harris "Mother" Jones in West Virginia, and participated in the Battle of Blair Mountain uprising. In later years, he advocated on behalf of black lung victims, and was able to receive union compensation for his own health problems in 1971."
