We are airing these shows nearly 70 years after they were originally broadcast, almost to the week. It's funny how they haven't aged too badly.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:05pm
Austin Rich:

Rocky discusses being at the "Battle of the Bulge," which took place from 16 December 1944 – 28 January 1945, about 10 years before this show was made. He was probably 18 during the war, and around 28 at the time of this story. (The first time we could do that kind of math, using facts from the show.)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:07pm
Austin Rich:

Rocky hints at having what would have been called "Shell Shock" then, and is now known as PTSD (I believe... I'm no doctor.) It's interesting that Rocky admits that. While Rocky is unusual in many ways, he certainly seems to be forward thinking, as someone not afraid to discuss their issues with strangers.

While there isn't specific evidence to point to where the Rocky Fortune stories are set, this story reinforces the general idea that Rocky lives in New York.

Driving from New York to Hollywood by truck in 1954 must have been slow going, and a VERY long trip.

I was curious about how many commercials I made for this show. I counted all the ones I wrote for 2022, the first year of this show. I didn't write commercials every week, and I missed a few weeks that year, too. Still, I wrote and recorded 339 different commercials for this show that year, totaling about four and a half hours of audio, if you run them straight through.

That is a LOT of fake ads.

I wonder if there was an original story that was the basis for all the long-drives-carrying- nitro stories. Maybe this was it?

I've mentioned this before, but "Bold Venture" was recorded it two long bursts, and in-between, they went off to make a movie.

Apparently, recording "Bold Venture" was done in a long string of regular work days, where they would record a few, break for lunch, and come back to record more afterwards. Apparently, Bogart always returned from lunch HAMMERED, but still recorded his lines fine, even when drunk. I'm not sure I can really tell which ones are when he was drunk, and which ones were "before lunch," but I suspect you could probably work it out if you listened VERY closely.

↳ Song: "Frank Sinatra: The Voice of Our Time (Part 5)" by...
By 1990, Mel Torme - who had suffered from a career downturn in the late 70's and early 80's, was on the upswing by 1990, and was starting to attract larger crowds, and was getting a little revisionism to how he was being seen by the world at large.

This was mostly due to him being referenced so often on "Night Court," and then later, making TV appearances where he demonstrated his sense of humor. While I don't think comedy or documentaries were ever his thing, I do appreciate that Mel finally started to get his due in the late 80's and 90's.

Dean:

I continue to have trouble with Sinatra. It occurred to me that he is the proto-Billie Eilish. Bear with me! Her whole schtick, like that of Cat Power and countless other "singers," is to not just to make the song seem effortless, but to expend as little effort as possible. Every once in a while that's how Sinatra strikes me. Worse even than phoning it in.
Avatar 10:18pm
Mr Fab:

↳ Austin Rich @10:13
that downturn was common for a lot of singers of that era. Boomers scorned that kind of music. I specifically remember the usually-great "Doonesbury" strip ridiculing Cole Porter's lyrics. The crooners (and exotica/Space Age bandleaders, etc) had to wait for GenXers to come along and help revive their careers in the '90s.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:21pm

Another lilttle "blip" in the official archives for this show. Those tape glitches are probably from the person who was transfering these from one set of tapes to another. Most likely, these came from transcription discs, that were then put on tape, and then transferred endlessly to other mediums. So the potential for glitches are many.
