Waldron started out playing with Mingus, Abbey Lincoln, Max Roach, etc. with something of a different style. in '63 he had a heroin overdose that left him unable to remember music or how to play. He had to slowly redevelop his skills and his resultant, now-defining style is this unique, angular, Monk-inspired technique: "likened to American minimalism: a slow accretion of almost subliminal harmonic and rhythmic shifts steadily pile up until the music seems ready to overbalance"

due to the way the liner notes are written, there is some conjecture as to whether Mal is actually playing on this record (alongside Lafayette Hudson & other members of the Lafayette Afro Rock Band!), or whether he just wrote / conducted. I think he's playing but I'm not sure
