Hollywood Palladium: saw the odd punk fashion show in '78 or '79, The Cramps, and Jesus & Mary Chain there long ago. J&MC were not loud enough.

No jack-offs at the record store where I worked in the late '70s, but one guy was dealing cocaine from the back room. Suddenly, he disappeared.

Sweaty palm record boys? Interesting. That's how I feel about Yo La Tengo.

This was New Jersey in the 80s. It was an uneasy time.
  10:45pm

No need to delve into it, but I find YLT a very talented group who release records I would never want to choose to hear. Yet they are clearly adored in certain circles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
coelacanth∅:

record stores i shopped in nj in the 80s were in cranford, westfield, elizabeth; a place along rt 1... edison? occasionally; and crazy eddies in union. i shopped in nyc mostly. no shortage of uppity assholes in most of those stores!
  10:47pm
Dean:

Oh, wait. You were ref'g my comment about the suddenly missing cocaine dealer. Yeah, me, neither.

Finally, something good from Geneva.
  11:02pm
Dean:

The only time I've heard Kim Gordon live was at Victo, when her performance embarrassed the regulars. It was, in a word, dreadful. I enjoyed it, because I'd not before experienced the visceral horror of fans who couldn't believe what they were hearing. Not being a fan of Sonic Youth, I wasn't all that surprised.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Mike Lupica:

↳ Dean @11:02
As someone who has never seen Sonic Youth live (yet has attended three Sonic Youth gigs over the years), I think I get where you're coming from. But I dig this new Kim song lots.

Wasnt Kleenex from Geneva?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm

↳ Alex from Media @11:15
Interwebs says Zurich, but point taken nonetheless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Mike Lupica:

Would also just like to point out how well that Barbara Stanwyck gif next to the Chaino song goes with EVERYTHING we're playing tonight.
  11:24pm
Alex from Media:

Serves me right for not checking. The Neutrals only narrowed it to Switzerland.
  11:25pm
Erik(VT):

I believe Kleenex / Liliput hail from Zurich Suisse !
Yet Austria 🇦🇹 produced a few worthy oddies:
Die Vogel Europas , Helmut Neugebauer , Lop Nor.
(among others !). Didn’t that wild 12 piece kollecktiv - (“something…Marcel Duchamp”) that played in the AM Back in October 2023, hail from Geneva.
  11:26pm

Vielen Dank Erik!

Crazy Suisse R.I.O. adjacent groups & splinter-offs are semi prolific: Ask DJs Tony C & Arb & Ken & etc…
Debile Menthol, Nimal, L’Ensemble Raye, Gilles Rieder & Victor de Bros (Dizze & Fizze), Peeni Waali Orch (?), Grauzone (Eicher Bros), sunrise studios Suisse with producer Etienne Conod, yadda blah yadda …🤭🤓😉

Framptuary is *this* month, or it would be if it were a real thing, which it's not. It's just an illusory Irwin meme.
  11:52pm
Alex from Media:

TX for the Dexter Romweber obit link. Unknown to me, now I can discover.
  11:55pm
Erik(VT):

Oh No/Yea!(Bipolar): I sold my copy of ‘the long run’
(among way too many other better albums) back around 1984? - (regrets I’ve had a few!). Now I really have a hankering to hear👂Jerry Rafferty “straight down the line” or other stuff from that album! (Steelers Wheel acceptable) 😝.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
Mike Lupica:

BIG Gerry Rafferty fan right here, Erik! But we'll have to wait for Raffertember to roll around in a few months in order to do it right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
Mike Lupica:

↳ Alex from Media @11:52
You won't be disappointed, Alex.
  12:04am
Alex from Media:

I ran into some Gerry Rafferty programming recently, was it earlier today? His early Humblebums stuff sounds an awful lot like McCartney ballads.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05am
Mike Lupica:

Sure could go for one of them probiotic gummies right about now.
  12:06am
Erik(VT):

Back in the day - couldn’t believe I had missed out on how great the 1st 3 albums of James Gang were (Joe Walsh) until hearing on RM’d CDs 💿. Would you/anyone know if Walsh’s 3 BARNSTORM albums are worthy of our precious ear time?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06am
Mike Lupica:

↳ Alex from Media @12:04
Funny you say that -- I thought (like, for decades) that "Stuck in the Middle with You" was a Paul McCartney solo song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08am
Mike Lupica:

↳ Erik(VT) @12:06
Glad we have a 15 minute stoner rock song on to have this convo. Short answer: YES! Lots of great stuff on those solo JW albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14am
Mike Lupica:

ALERT: The Barbara Stanwyck gif is absolutely CRUSHIN' it to this Richard Dawson song right now.
  12:15am
Erik(VT):

Ok ✅ thanks for your 2 cents🫡ha.
So i also read that Walsh had a prior band to James Gang -(The Measels?!) perhaps no recordings???
- so Rafferty was in a band prior to Steelers Wheel? - Geesh. The things we learn from fellow geek’d listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15am
Mike Lupica:

↳ Mike Lupica @12:14
Or at least, to the part that sounds like old Judas Priest.
  12:17am
Alex from Media:

4 Mike So it is. 4 Erik - I will be giving Eisbaer a listen after the show due to your mention of Grauzone.
  12:27am
Erik(VT):

@alex: re Grauzone: personally, imo (music snob that I am🧐😉) try the tracks from their 1st album - i think almost everything from the album is more interesting to listen to than their semi hit : 🧊 🐻‍❄️.
  12:31am
Alex from Media:

@ Erik Thanks, will do. My homework is piling up today.
  12:37am
Erik(VT):

- going back awhile: which RS albums/era would be considered the “weaker years”? - certainly after Tattoo You (1981)😛. I’m kinda partial to that Steve Lillywhite overproduction sheen on Dirty Work (1986) and I’ve been guided toward the virtually neglected “A Bigger Bang” (2005) - I seriously don’t recall any hype over that one? You?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39am
Mike Lupica:

Sorry Erik. Traveling north of "Tattoo You" and "Emotional Rescue" is a job for folks made of sturdier stuff than I am.
  12:43am
Erik(VT):

I’m very proud to be a fan-geek of Dylan’s “under the red sky” (studio album #27?) - produced by the clever Was (not Was) Bros !!! Yes indeedy.👏🙌🙇
  12:50am
Erik(VT):

…& Lastly; I will leave y’all with thank Uze / well wishes & the adamant geek’d recommendation to listen to as much of the career of Welshman ‘Andy Fairweather Low’.
Impossibly under played, heard or appreciated in a semi-popular (non) sense. Bye 👋
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53am

This is cool.
