Favoriting February 25, 2024: For Petra
This Sunday, I honor our good friend, who died last week after a long battle: missing her warmth, and her welcoming open heart - Münster is a lonelier place without her. This one's for her, and for her dear Peter. And we celebrate two birthdays: Maryanne Amacher, an American composer, working in the field of otoacoustic emissions, in which the ears themselves produce audible sound; and the wonderful wonderful Katz - Fred, that is - who was an early exponent of jazz cello.

' Maryanne Amacher (February 25, 1938 – October 22, 2009) was an American composer and installation artist. She is known for working extensively with a family of psychoacoustic phenomena called auditory distortion products (also known as distortion product otoacoustic emissions and combination tones), in which the ears themselves produce audible sound. ' Frederick Katz (February 25, 1919 – September 7, 2013) was an American cellist and composer. He was among the earliest jazz musicians to establish the cello as a viable improvising solo instrument. Katz has been described in CODA magazine as "the first real jazz cellist." '

Yeah. That's the thing about this 'Art' mess - maybe. It's some kind of messy exposition of where the culturally Objective & the reactively Subjective gurgle around each other trying to make shapes like a Psychedelic San Francisco light show on a weird day...
(...Whut ??...)
In my 'Maths' - that's maybe where the 'Relevant' algebra some in to represent. (i.e. : ...what does *that* mean - ?? :D ...)
...the danger I often think with Algebra being that as your Equations become Formulas & always longer - you can forget what real Quantity any Letter was supposed to be standing for in there - &/or why. (What happened with, say, Terence McKenna's 'TimeWave' trip, ferinstance...)
But I digress. (Cause I can I suppose...)

That must have been something. I love Joe McPhee, even more as a leader maybe. He always coaxes the best from those around him

The first time I saw him with Corsano, I though he (Corsano) was too respectful and subdued. I guess McPhee shared that sentiment as at a point he stopped playing and sat down, with a look that said "do something I want to join".
It worked

Sort of Extramusical situation can happen with the Jazzes - yet is completely Musical. Like when I saw Eddie Harris tell the local pickup Rhythm Section to just lay out - then he shames them by just clacking his sax keys as percussion. Won't be forgotten.

right, understand... but i haven't seen that much jazz, which is why i haven't witnessed it myself, but also understand that the element of improvisation in jazz adds a personal and social dimension

The grand tradition of 'Cutting' where there was always a competitive aspect. Easy to forget in such (ahem) polite times as these ...& such an austere establishment as where we find ourselves presently...

Hello Stork and swells! I’ve been listening while driving since noon, and am now coming to you live from a car wash somewhere in Brooklyn, because undercarriage dirt is for Dirty Glen Passaics.

  2:23pm

There is a Brooklyn Car Wash (2oz Glen Passaic, 1oz dirty soapy water, 1oz RainX, served “hard” with a pressure washer or “soft” with a squeegee) but it’s so basic as hardly to be worth the mention.

Funny thing brought to mind by your recommendation to listen on headphones earlier–

It makes excellent technical sense to prefer headphones (as transducers they're capable of delivering a frequency response and low distortion level most speakers don't even dare dream of) – and on top of that, I have some unreasonably good headphones right here – but in general I just prefer listening to music via loudspeakers. Huh.
