Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from March 21, 2024 Favoriting

austinrich's avatar View austinrich's profile Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

I haven't had to ship any paintings, but I've had to ship a lot of posters and art prints. There's a lot of discussion over shipping them "flat" or "rolled," and often the cost is the deciding factor.

This is one of many "deep cuts" that I haven't perused on radio yet.

When I used to work at the Velveteria, we would drive ourselves bonkers trying to figure out who "Lila" was (one signature on a painting they found). Unless you become famous, or are still alive to promote your work, a lot of artists like that just disappear into history.

In the prisons of Nantes
There's a prisoner here
There's a prisoner here
That no one's gonna see
Than the jailer's daughter

She brings him a drink
To drink and eat
To drink and eat
And white shirts as well
When he wants to change it

One day he asks her
"I want to talk to you
"I want to talk to you
They say throughout the city
Tomorrow you will die

Since I must die
Untie my feet
Untie my feet
The girl was a young girl
His feet let go of him

The gallant leaves alert
In the Loire jumped
In the Loire jumped
All the bells of Nantes
They started ringing

I did too, but also my grandfather bartended during the day, and my grandmother would bring me there and let me put quarters into the juke box. there is a favorite memory of me trying to throw the coins into the juke box from the door, like Michael Jackson did in the video for "Smooth Criminal". not a poetry show per se, but "Beneath The Underground' features some. Last night's episode featured readings from what is apparently a new book of Lou Reed's poetry. And one of the hosts, John Pietaro, reads his own stuff sometimes. Which is really cool, I should get one of his books.

Manchester in those days was dark and wild and slightly dangerous (probably akin to late 70s NYC), and because it was so run-down and forgotten, all the good cultural stuff could actually have a place to happen unnoticed and undisturbed. I got there after having grown up in a picture-postcard English rural village (thatched cottages, workers in the fields, harvest festival etc) and it both scared the bejesus out of me and thrilled me beyond belief. Like suddenly being in a JG Ballard novel. I was hunted by a pack of wild dogs once in Hulme.

I wrote a surrealist/dadaist novel when I was 19 and not sleeping for days, some of was written on LSD in pitch black darkness. I could see in the dark at the time. But that doesn't count as a novel really...

Lester Bangs would put down his first novel "Drug Punk," and say that he was glad it was never published. Of course, years later, I read parts of it... because of course, we live in the future... and he was right: it's not that good.

This was one of those "OG" versions of "Dimestore Radio Theater" that I would do, periodically, for years, on my regular show... when I was bored and had the time. But in this era, I would do it more like this, and this style of show evolved into the complete version of "Dimestore Radio Theater" that I do on Sheena's, these days.

I watched the original Maltese Falcon from the 30s with Ricardo Cortez last year. So very different. Oddly enough I caught a bit of a pulpy thriller Cortez was in with Myrna Loy and Irene Dunne last night called Thirteen Women.

My roommate took me to see "Touch of Evil" at a theater in the 90's, as I didn't know the movie. I had just broken up with a girl that was a real mind-trip, and that movie just SPOKE to me in a very intense way.

↳ Song: "Goldfinger" by "Shirley Bassey"
I used to bartend very expensive catered events. One time there was a big scene for stockbrokers or something. There was a spiral staircase with a Shirley Bassey impersonator whose voice was even bigger. There were women in velvet dresses retrieving snacks from a little helicopter that lowered a tray down to her. Actual cars from the Bond movies were there for people to take photos in front of. I served the mayor, he was a dick.
