Gossette’s folky past is news to me - so thanks for that!
re The Landlord (which I find still worthy & an American/NYC early 1970s “cultural/hystorical” curio: IMO, Pearl Bailey was solid as well. But Lee Grant hits her uptight privileged character outta the park. & I know he’s playing an insufferable character, yet Beau Bridges is a riot to watch going thru a panicky faux life learning experience.

More than you think... She's a Bharatanatyam dancer, I first talked to her after noticing a line of red dye on her feet, had to ask and she indeed was coming from practice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Krys O.:

Hi, Erik! I saw The Landlord last year and it blew my mind. Lee Grant is always so good. I loved Diana Sands. It's funny to think that she and Lou were also together in Raisin in the Sun. As usual, I really go for the secondary character actors, and the theme of ridiculing gentrification had me laughing so hard.

Indeed Krys ! What an utterly amazing consecutive run of brilliant films Hal Ashby had from 1970 thru 1979!
(& then sadly, a precipitous drop in quality, as if from a cliff…thereafter). Imo, the 1980s were so “hard” on so many late 1960s/1970s talents (cinema & music).

I became so disgusted with new films from Hollywood in the 80s that I stopped going to see new films. The piece of crap that did me in was Best Defense. My friends took me along and I thought that it might be okay with Dudley Moore and Eddie Murphy. What an abomination.

Of course, always “exceptions to a rule”. There were definitely brilliant films and directors arriving & creating all throughout the 1980s ! 👉 (it was the boom of the off-Hollywood Indy film scene after all) yet they were mostly arthouse cinema. Agreed, majority of the Hollywood scene was mostly miserable. Yet, some of the best 80s Hollywood Movies were the ones self reflexively critiquing its own vibe and or the so outrageously self absorbed blockbusters (& failures!) to be jaw-droppingly entertaining…

Thank you, Krys, for the audio roller coaster ride. I missed the Gossett but hung on for the rest of the ride. Onward.
