Bryan Ferry	The In Crowd "The In Crowd" by "Bryan Ferry"	Another Time, Another Place	Virgin	1974	Another Time, Another Place was Bryan Ferry's second studio album as a solo artist. The album reached #4 in the UK charts in 1974. Recording took place in London at Island, Ramport and AIR studios. Robert Christgau wrote of the album "Comedy routines are rarely as funny the second time around, especially when you've used up your best lines--"The `In' Crowd" is the only zinger Ferry comes up with here." And his version of the song definitely slaps! "The 'In' Crowd" is a 1964 song written by Billy Page and arranged by his brother Gene and originally performed by Dobie Gray on his album Dobie Gray Sings for "In" Crowders That Go "Go-Go". Founded by singer-songwriter Chris Bailey, drummer Ivor Hay, and guitarist-songwriter Ed Kuepper, they originally employed fast tempos, raucous vocals and a "buzzsaw" guitar sound that helped initiate punk rock in Australia and identified them with the greater international movement. This 1996 cover checks their love of fast living girl groups and rock and roll...with an uptempo, intense take on a classic. The Crystals recorded "Da Doo Ron Ron" in March 1963 at Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles. It was produced by Phil Spector in his Wall of Sound style. Jack Nitzsche was the arranger and Larry Levine the engineer. The drummer was Hal Blaine. The song was composed over two days in Spector's office in New York. Originally recorded by the Velvelettes, Bananarama's 1982 single became the second consecutive top-five hit for both Bananarama and Fun Boy Three, peaking at number five in the UK singles chart. It also received heavy play on the then-young MTV network in America. Pop’s unhinged screams of “Get Up!” and the versatility of his ensuing vocal performance make it one of his most captivating sonic outings. He honours James Brown, the ‘Godfather of Soul’ with a whole load of attitude and sex appeal. Who can be surprised? In terms of attitude and bedroom antics, both Brown and Pop have a lot more in common than you’d initially think. The Ramones	Little Bit O' Soul "Little Bit O' Soul" by "The Ramones"	Subterranean Jungle	Sire	1983	Marked by inner turmoil culminating in the sacking of Marky Ramone (who is relegated to a barely-visible window cameo on the cover, in stark contrast to his front-centre bandmates), Subterranean Jungle is the musical equivalent of a person’s last attempts at salvation before drowning or being pulled under by quicksand. While this cover kicking off the album showed lots of promise...the rest of this Ramones record is not...well regarded. But props to the Ramones for sticking to their love of bubblegum 60's pop. This particular version keeps its bounce and in my books, Joey can't really do any wrong. "Little Bit O' Soul" is a song written in 1964 by British songwriters John Carter and Ken Lewis. It was originally recorded by Coventry band The Little Darlings, and released in 1965 on Fontana Records in the UK. Setting Sons is the fourth studio album by the English rock band the Jam. In contrast to its pop-oriented predecessor, Setting Sons features a much harder, tougher production, albeit with the emphasis on melody common throughout the Jam's discography. The Belle Stars	1981	Norman Jesse Whitfield (May 12, 1940 – September 16, 2008) was an American songwriter and producer, who worked with Berry Gordy's Motown labels during the 1960s. He has been credited as one of the creators of the Motown Sound and of the late-1960s subgenre of psychedelic soul. At 19, Whitfield began frequenting Motown's Hitsville USA offices for a chance to work for the growing label. Founder Berry Gordy Jr. recognized Whitfield's persistence and hired him for the quality control department, which determined which songs would or would not be released. Whitfield joined Motown's in-house songwriting staff, co-writing the Marvin Gaye hit "Pride & Joy", the Marvelettes's "Too Many Fish in the Sea" and the Velvelettes's "Needle in a Haystack". The Belle Stars formed after the all-female two-tone band The Bodysnatchers broke up in 1980, guitarists Stella Barker and Sarah-Jane Owen, saxophonist Miranda Joyce, keyboardist Penny Leyton, and drummer Judy Parsons decided to form a new band, recruiting bass player Lesley Shone and lead vocalist Jennie Matthias (also known as Jennie Bellestar). The Plastics	Last Train To Clarkesville	Last Train To Clarkesville 7"	Island	1981	Plastics, or the Plastics, were a short-lived Japanese new wave band who rose to prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Their music was a major influence on Japanese pop music and their songs have been covered by many bands, most notably Polysics, Pizzicato Five, and Stereo Total. They are positively delightful and this wonky cover is especially charming. The song was written by the songwriting duo of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. Boyce has said that the song's opening guitar part (played by Louis Shelton) was an attempt to emulate the type of memorable and clearly identifiable riff that the Beatles had used in songs such as "I Feel Fine," "Day Tripper" and "Paperback Writer". Naked Eyes	Always Something There To Remind Me	Always Something There To Remind Me / Pit Stop 7"	EMI	1981	Naked Eyes weren't as cool as Depeche Mode, or OMD...or even Duran Duran. But they nailed it with this tune. Written by Bacharach/David and demo'd by Dionne Warwick...Naked Eyes was formed by Pete Byrne and Rob Fisher. The two had formerly been part of a band called Neon, with future members of Tears for Fears. Also some would call this British band forgettable, they had another huge hit with their song "Promises Promises" and "When the Lights Go Out" Following the release of the band's second album, Byrne moved to California. He performed on Stevie Wonder's "Part-Time Lover", sang backgrounds with Rita Coolidge and Princess Stephanie, and wrote and produced for the Olsen twins.		1:14:27 (MP3 \| Pop-up)
The Psychedelic Furs	Mack The Knife	Pretty In Pink/Mack The Knife 7":	Columbia	1981	The Psychedelic Furs’ version of ‘Mack The Knife’ served as the B-side to ‘Pretty In Pink’ and was later featured as a non-LP B-side on the band’s self-titled studio album, appearing alongside tracks like ‘India’, ‘Flowers’ and ‘Sister Europe’. Full of angular riffs and churning beats, it’s a perfect blend of krautrock propulsion and British popcraft. If only old Brecht had lived long enough to hear it. Swervedriver	Reflections "Reflections" by "Swervedriver"	Think I'm Gonna Feel Better/Reflections Single	Dangerbird Records	2019	Swervedriver have been steadily increasing their output since the end of their decade-long break-up. The ’90s British shoegaze band got back together in 2015 and have been releasing steadily, with a new album released just this year. Reflections is a double A-side EP featuring covers of “Reflections” by the the Supremes and “I Think I’m Going To Feel Better” by Gene Clark. The EP was originally released on 2019 Record Store as a 7". "Reflections" is a 1967 song recorded by American soul music group The Supremes for the Motown label. Howard & Dick Sturm (AKA Mick Harvey), writing creditted to Murray Mitchell (Fur Bible, Siouxsie & The Banshees, et. al) -- "Mick Harvey has stated that the project was originally conceived as a new band; a collaboration between Harvey, Lunch, Genevieve McGuckin and Rowland S. Howard. After the initial recording sessions in Berlin in June 1982, the tapes languished without a release. In 1987 Lunch readied the tapes for release on her own Widowspeak label, with added contributions by J.G. Thirlwell and Thurston Moore. Lunch had already fallen out with Nick Cave and Harvey, and they insisted that their names not appear on the release, as they had no hand in the remix and overdubbing. Lunch subsequently used pseudonyms for Cave and Harvey (including "A drunk cowboy junkie" and "Dick Strum", respectively) and obliquely criticized them in her liner notes as "tight asses" and "sheep in wolf's clothing". Dirty Three	Love Changes Everything I	Love Changes Everything	Drag City	2024	Warren Ellis, Mick Turner and Jim White are back as Dirty Three, and have announced Love Changes Everything, their first album in 12 years, that will be out June 28 via Drag City. The trio made the record at Melbourne’s Headgap Studios with engineer Nick Huggins behind the boards. It was recorded in five days but they spent a year mixing it. //// The album consists of “Love changes everything” in six parts, with the trio’s raw live-in-studio recordings having been “untethered from its streams of consciousness and reconsidered as a recording; brought to bear through edits, overdubs and mixes, resequenced and made suite-like. Made into this album.” Dirty Three have shared the first part, which finds their unique violin/guitar/drums alchemy as fiery as ever. Bryan Ferry	The In Crowd "The In Crowd" by "Bryan Ferry"	Another Time, Another Place	Virgin	1974	Another Time, Another Place was Bryan Ferry's second studio album as a solo artist. The album reached #4 in the UK charts in 1974. Recording took place in London at Island, Ramport and AIR studios. Robert Christgau wrote of the album "Comedy routines are rarely as funny the second time around, especially when you've used up your best lines--"The `In' Crowd" is the only zinger Ferry comes up with here." And his version of the song definitely slaps! "The 'In' Crowd" is a 1964 song written by Billy Page and arranged by his brother Gene and originally performed by Dobie Gray on his album Dobie Gray Sings for "In" Crowders That Go "Go-Go". Jack Nitzsche was the arranger and Larry Levine the engineer. The drummer was Hal Blaine. The song was composed over two days in Spector's office in New York. Pop’s unhinged screams of “Get Up!” and the versatility of his ensuing vocal performance make it one of his most captivating sonic outings. He honours James Brown, the ‘Godfather of Soul’ with a whole load of attitude and sex appeal. Who can be surprised? In terms of attitude and bedroom antics, both Brown and Pop have a lot more in common than you’d initially think. The Ramones	Little Bit O' Soul "Little Bit O' Soul" by "The Ramones"	Subterranean Jungle	Sire	1983	Marked by inner turmoil culminating in the sacking of Marky Ramone (who is relegated to a barely-visible window cameo on the cover, in stark contrast to his front-centre bandmates), Subterranean Jungle is the musical equivalent of a person’s last attempts at salvation before drowning or being pulled under by quicksand. While this cover kicking off the album showed lots of promise...the rest of this Ramones record is not...well regarded. But props to the Ramones for sticking to their love of bubblegum 60's pop. This particular version keeps its bounce and in my books, Joey can't really do any wrong. "Little Bit O' Soul" is a song written in 1964 by British songwriters John Carter and Ken Lewis. It was originally recorded by Coventry band The Little Darlings, and released in 1965 on Fontana Records in the UK. Setting Sons is the fourth studio album by the English rock band the Jam. In contrast to its pop-oriented predecessor, Setting Sons features a much harder, tougher production, albeit with the emphasis on melody common throughout the Jam's discography. The Belle Stars	1981	Norman Jesse Whitfield (May 12, 1940 – September 16, 2008) was an American songwriter and producer, who worked with Berry Gordy's Motown labels during the 1960s. He has been credited as one of the creators of the Motown Sound and of the late-1960s subgenre of psychedelic soul. At 19, Whitfield began frequenting Motown's Hitsville USA offices for a chance to work for the growing label. Founder Berry Gordy Jr. recognized Whitfield's persistence and hired him for the quality control department, which determined which songs would or would not be released. Whitfield joined Motown's in-house songwriting staff, co-writing the Marvin Gaye hit "Pride & Joy", the Marvelettes's "Too Many Fish in the Sea" and the Velvelettes's "Needle in a Haystack". The Belle Stars formed after the all-female two-tone band The Bodysnatchers broke up in 1980, guitarists Stella Barker and Sarah-Jane Owen, saxophonist Miranda Joyce, keyboardist Penny Leyton, and drummer Judy Parsons decided to form a new band, recruiting bass player Lesley Shone and lead vocalist Jennie Matthias (also known as Jennie Bellestar). The Plastics	Last Train To Clarkesville	Last Train To Clarkesville 7"	Island	1981	Plastics, or the Plastics, were a short-lived Japanese new wave band who rose to prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Their music was a major influence on Japanese pop music and their songs have been covered by many bands, most notably Polysics, Pizzicato Five, and Stereo Total. They are positively delightful and this wonky cover is especially charming. The song was written by the songwriting duo of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. Boyce has said that the song's opening guitar part (played by Louis Shelton) was an attempt to emulate the type of memorable and clearly identifiable riff that the Beatles had used in songs such as "I Feel Fine," "Day Tripper" and "Paperback Writer". Naked Eyes	Always Something There To Remind Me	Always Something There To Remind Me / Pit Stop 7"	EMI	1981	Naked Eyes weren't as cool as Depeche Mode, or OMD...or even Duran Duran. But they nailed it with this tune. Written by Bacharach/David and demo'd by Dionne Warwick...Naked Eyes was formed by Pete Byrne and Rob Fisher. The two had formerly been part of a band called Neon, with future members of Tears for Fears. Also some would call this British band forgettable, they had another huge hit with their song "Promises Promises" and "When the Lights Go Out" Following the release of the band's second album, Byrne moved to California. He performed on Stevie Wonder's "Part-Time Lover", sang backgrounds with Rita Coolidge and Princess Stephanie, and wrote and produced for the Olsen twins.		1:14:27 (MP3 \| Pop-up)
The Psychedelic Furs	Mack The Knife	Pretty In Pink/Mack The Knife 7":	Columbia	1981	The Psychedelic Furs’ version of ‘Mack The Knife’ served as the B-side to ‘Pretty In Pink’ and was later featured as a non-LP B-side on the band’s self-titled studio album, appearing alongside tracks like ‘India’, ‘Flowers’ and ‘Sister Europe’. Full of angular riffs and churning beats, it’s a perfect blend of krautrock propulsion and British popcraft. If only old Brecht had lived long enough to hear it. Swervedriver	Reflections "Reflections" by "Swervedriver"	Think I'm Gonna Feel Better/Reflections Single	Dangerbird Records	2019	Swervedriver have been steadily increasing their output since the end of their decade-long break-up. The ’90s British shoegaze band got back together in 2015 and have been releasing steadily, with a new album released just this year. Reflections is a double A-side EP featuring covers of “Reflections” by the the Supremes and “I Think I’m Going To Feel Better” by Gene Clark. The EP was originally released on 2019 Record Store as a 7". "Reflections" is a 1967 song recorded by American soul music group The Supremes for the Motown label. Howard & Dick Sturm (AKA Mick Harvey), writing creditted to Murray Mitchell (Fur Bible, Siouxsie & The Banshees, et. al) -- "Mick Harvey has stated that the project was originally conceived as a new band; a collaboration between Harvey, Lunch, Genevieve McGuckin and Rowland S. Howard. After the initial recording sessions in Berlin in June 1982, the tapes languished without a release. In 1987 Lunch readied the tapes for release on her own Widowspeak label, with added contributions by J.G. Thirlwell and Thurston Moore. Lunch had already fallen out with Nick Cave and Harvey, and they insisted that their names not appear on the release, as they had no hand in the remix and overdubbing. Lunch subsequently used pseudonyms for Cave and Harvey (including "A drunk cowboy junkie" and "Dick Strum", respectively) and obliquely criticized them in her liner notes as "tight asses" and "sheep in wolf's clothing". Dirty Three	Love Changes Everything I	Love Changes Everything	Drag City	2024	Warren Ellis, Mick Turner and Jim White are back as Dirty Three, and have announced Love Changes Everything, their first album in 12 years, that will be out June 28 via Drag City. The trio made the record at Melbourne’s Headgap Studios with engineer Nick Huggins behind the boards. It was recorded in five days but they spent a year mixing it. //// The album consists of “Love changes everything” in six parts, with the trio’s raw live-in-studio recordings having been “untethered from its streams of consciousness and reconsidered as a recording; brought to bear through edits, overdubs and mixes, resequenced and made suite-like. Made into this album.” Dirty Three have shared the first part, which finds their unique violin/guitar/drums alchemy as fiery as ever.
