Discotech Underground is actually two...two...two shows in one!

The first half is a "Happy Hour" of sorts (because it's five o'clock somewhere, right?), spinning the kinds of sounds you might have heard at a real, authentic 1960's DISCOTECH as cool cats and swingin' chicks danced the night away in their mod threads and mini skirts to hard-driving sounds under the flashing lights! The only thing missing are the cage dancers...but we're working on it!

The second half is for when you head home after a wild night, and ease in with the heady, trippy, mind-expanding sounds of a groovy free-form UNDERGROUND rock radio station that digs deep into their library and blows your mind all over again!

You and Beantown Doug have awakened the noob from his torpor... As a person not in audio, I always feel that mono sounds kind of dull. Does that bottom end you speak of sacrifice high times? @ Beantown Doug, How does left-right groove modulation gain loudness?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:04pm
Alex from Media:

↳ Alex from Media @6:02
that would be "high tones"! not entirely out of my torpor
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:06pm
Discotech Underground:

↳ Alex from Media @6:02
It depends on the individual recording and the record itself. If it's a dedicated mono mix, you sometimes hear things that are buried or less audible on the stereo version. Some stereo mixes thin the sound out too much and the bottom end gets lost. It's a matter of taste and preference, I guess.
  6:07pm
Chuck:

In mono getting the correct balance of volume from each instrument and vocals is the key to it???...:)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:09pm
Beantown Doug:

↳ Alex from Media @6:02
Tracking is done vertically, in addition to horizontally for stereo. Old mono record players could track only left-right, and could damage stereo discs. Mono records could be tracked with heavier forces, making it possible for even cheap record players to be used. True mono discs could be cut LOUD and with more BASS without fear of mistracking. The most legendary example was the first Led Zeppelin LP. It was cut at the max that stereo cut be done, and complaints about tonearms flying off the grooves resulted in the album being remastered quieter, with less bass. Hence the search for "hot stamper" vinyl.
  6:10pm
Chuck:

Dig this Rory, btw...:)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:10pm
Discotech Underground:

Some 60's record producers tried to get too cute with the stereo mixes and they end up sounding watered down and less focused. The first Red Crayola album is like that. The stereo is a mess but the mono is solid as a rock and a much more enjoyable experience.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:12pm
Beantown Doug:

↳ Beantown Doug @6:09
Anti-skating is also less of a concern with true mono tracking, because both sides of the groove are the same. "Inner-groove distortion" is a stereo disc effect. Again, it's all about preventing mistracking.

The bottom line is that true mono records that were made after the RIAA equalization curve was defined, can be loud with great bass. The spacial effect of stereo is what people respond to as being better than mono. I for one do not care for mono Classical music.
