The Radio Is Broken is a three-hour spelunk through the canyons and fissures of humanity's collective unconscious. It sounds as if a field recording of the Culture Industry were a sonic juggernaut barreling down a rickety track—except that tunnel ahead is just painted onto a sheer cliff wall. With occasional forays into what might pass for "normal" music. Prerequisite journey: Cratedigger's Lung

Charles Dodge | Earth's Magnetic Field | Earth's Magnetic Field | Nonesuch Records | 1970 |
"But what would happen if Earth's magnetic field disappeared tomorrow? A larger number of charged solar particles would bombard the planet, putting power grids and satellites on the fritz and increasing human exposure to higher levels of cancer-causing ultraviolet radiation. In other words, a missing magnetic field would have consequences that would be problematic but not necessarily apocalyptic, at least in the short term." [source] |

Oh wait. That was actually really fun. But yeah, it could be lonely, trying to find other weirdos. Especially because the signal-to-noise ratio was so bad. Too many normal people.

but before that, when "punk rock" was big news in the late 70s i heard mentioned, with disgust, "dead kennedys"...so i went out looking for dead kennedys!
i got in god we trust, inc. because it was the least expensive one, and i'm glad that was my first dks record.

I'm gonna walk up to the lake in a bit (I live very close to the shores of Lake Erie here) and see if I can see any northern lights action.
There is a lot of city light pollution, though... even up by the lake where I am.

I didn't even know something like college radio existed when I was growing up.
I moved to Cleveland post-grad school graduation for a job and discovered this amazing wealth on the low end of the dial here (we've got 5 college stations in the region!! whoa). Never looked back.
I wanted to do a radio show so that I could help folks get exposure to the weird stuff, things I never had exposure to in younger days. Life changing sound exploration. Experimental/weirdo sound changed my life, ya know?

In 1998, I helped start a pirate station for the same reason: weirdo radio changed my life back in NJ, and I needed to find a way to continue that tradition here in southeastern Vermont. Here's a little bit about it: www.diymedia.net...

It was one of the best things I've ever done. I'd wanted to have a radio show since I was 10 years old. I had to help start a pirate station 14 years later to achieve that goal, but I did it.
