Favoriting May 11, 2024: Pole Dancing in the Moonlight

At various points during tonight's show, we'll pour some out for Gary Floyd (the Dicks), Steve Albini (Big Black, Shellac), and Dennis Thompson (The MC5). No "career retrospective" shenanigans, but if the music those bands made meant something to you, tonight's program is the place to toast lives well-lived.

I'd say the scenery seems too sophisticated and simple at the same time and the quality of the photography, the lighting etc. I don't think Ed Wood could afford so much excellence.

As a Gen-Xer, I'm going to publicly declare that many of us -- myself included -- said and believed some pretty ridiculous shit when we were younger, for which we had to unlearn and make amends for later in life. It seems a rite of passage. My own work in this department certainly continues.

The concept of "dilution" confuses and concerns me. Who are the gatekeepers of any particular type of music, and why should they exist? Do we really believe that the value of a particular long-ago song or artist declines because today's teenagers like it? Who are we to decide who gets to enjoy what?
I dunno. These are all big questions, and like the Jew I am, I'll just answer a question with more questions. (I'm also trying to get some work done, so maybe I don't even wanna discuss it right now.)

Mike Lupica:

I clam up something fierce around famous people. I once rode an elevator with Joe Strummer and immediately transformed into the King of the Weenies. I've also insulted Fab Five Freddie (by accident) and once hid from PJ Harvey when I had the opportunity to meet her (because I knew if I did, I would commit some kind of public stupidity which I'd think about for the rest of my life.)

After playing the Snatch 45 a few weeks ago (and mentioning on-mic that I'd never heard their other records), I did some spelunking on an old hard drive and discovered that I had MP3s of their album from 1983. Let's hear it for disorganized digital media collections!

The Catherine Wheel's first full album, Ferment, from '92, was one of my shoegaze faves at the time. I don't think it's aged all that well, though, not like Curve, Lush, or Slowdive.

Always regretted NOT purchasing this snatch Lp! - as a youth (1984?) held it in my sweaty hands at Bleeker Bobs and conflictedly put it back. and then never sawer it again. $10 bucks was a commitment back then. I had only known of their “R.A.F.” song - which is fabulous! I had no idea it had flying lizards connections (among others) for that matter. (Patti P) & awhile later, didn’t even realize Pal Judy (On-U-Sounds) was half the duo. blah yadda blah. 😉
