Hi WR! Do you have a favorite Steve albini related track. I'm trying to pick one. But it's been too long since I've listened much. and I don't think I've listened to enough Shellac to figure that in. We have their records. But they were gifts from me to gordon and I can't remember which songs I was into when I got them.

The second time I saw Big Black they did the setting off of a coil of firecrackers stunt...a pretty ill-advised idea since, unlike the first show there a year earlier, there was a full crowd in the unventilated, let's call it intimate, basement venue that was No Bar & Grill in Muncie, proprietor Jon Rans kept his gong that he used when his band Mystic Groovies played on stage all the time, I remember Santiago wisely positioning himself behind it. I remember Rans' young son Ian bolting for the door, I waited the detonation out and took the opening at the front of the stage the second the opportunity presented itself (the assembled first line of people cursed with an interest in their own saftety having hung back as best they could). There were no injuries, but everyone would observe a certain blackening of their snot later.

Die Kreuzen played that venue (with Boy Dirt Car opening) and made use of a fog machine. Absolute zero visibility, every now and then, from where I stood at the side of the stage, the bassist's head, with his big Siouxsie Sioux hair would emerge at me alarmingly.

We drove up to Portland to see my cousin play, but they brought these compact travel lighting things and fog machines. It did add drama and it was very portable. It was cool to see them do a Diamanda Galas type number as well as other kinds of things with super portability. And all DIY.
But you could not see him in the fog at all! I think drummers are used to that kind of thing.

How are you liking mastodon? I stick with Facebook and Instagram but want to pay attention if other things come along that make sense to join. some of them don't appeal to me and I don't see that i need them for any future interests. Like that link tree thing. that's freaky to me.

That is how I am with Voivoid. Their old guitarist Piggy had this signature sound that I fucking hate! It sounds like an English police siren. woo woo woo woo... It would be a cool effect for a song or two. but the entire length of every song they used to do had that siren sound.
Their new guitarist doesn't do that, which may annoy old fans. but I like it more. and it doesn't give me a headache.

Mr Fab: We wanted Steve to produce the Celebrity Skin lp! I found an interview Albini and I did together a while back atRoscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles that includes that story. Guess I gotta play it. Meanwhile, I fancy that this is the sort of Glambience Steve would dig the most.

They were great live. I saw them with Faith No More and Soundgarden and they didn't come close to matching them. Their records are OK, I can't say I played any of them into the ground or anything...but in person.

I never saw any of those bands live. Late 80s through mid 90s I had to focus on caring for elders and my child. but I noticed some things here and there. At least by recordings.
Avatar 5:58pm
Debbie Davenport:

Mr Bungle used to play a lot where I lived before I got pregnant. Like when they were teens. It was a huge deal that they submitted a vhs tape to MTV and got to be on that show that got them noticed. Never saw them after they got famous though.

I loved that.
I met Gwen from the Pandoras because we had a class together called Theories of Art or something like that. I had made a modern example of what the teacher was talking about using the Germs and at that same moment she was at the back of the class doodling Darby. So she came up to me after class and told me that. it was really interesting.
Even dorky redneck teens like me had heard of you guys and knew about the intensity it felt you were ushering in.

There was some kind of thing going on the brief time I knew her. Some Gwenadoras versus Pauladoras thing. I think Rodney talked about it. Not being from there, I didn't totally follow all the past and present at the time personal things going on with locals. Once in awhile some of them would bring things up when visiting though.
I love Los Angeles. So much channeled creativity!!!!!

I'm afraid I can't remember the details well. I felt to shy to friend Gwen on facebook so I can't ask her. I think they tried to have two bands after some issues and tension or else people were taking sides and that was how gossip was referenced. Someone else my age or older that is from there would probably remember better.

There were two Surfaris in the '90s/early 2000s - one had a number of orig members, and the other was a member who got Christian and hired his family to play. Had to be careful I was gonna see the right one.

At the one version you could probably walk up to the stage and renew your faith in God. The other version might be wild and uninhibited. A stimulating Christian danger to teens!
