Will thee SG OCNY:

I think the biggest thing is that he spoke his mind with very little filter. He had a heart of gold, would spend precious time with anyone who would listen. Describe his recording ideology, thoughts, practices, mic placement, mic choices ect. I'm disappointed I never had the opportunity to speak with him. The closest I ever got was about 20' away at the Bell House during a Shellac show. I know people whom recorded with him and people who really wanted to work with him. It seems as if Chicago lost a big part of their scene and soul. Soo many great things are being shared about him. It's a shame we celebrate people after their gone, and not celebrate them while amongst the living. It's still hitting me hard. The new Shellac album To All Trains is epic. It was both a pleasure to listen to as much as a heartbreak. Very parallel for me as to when Bowie died when I received my copy of Blackstar on Vinyl. Long live his legacy, long live the music, long live his view on building DIY community, and long live people's memories and anecdotes about him. Rest in Power Steve Albini!
  Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
Ira:

Will thee SG OCNY. Not to contradict you, but to add. I'm sure a lot of the people that he gleefully and gratuitously attacked might question that heart of gold.

Finally, I get to hear Ars Nova. When I was a kid, life magazine did an issue called 'The New Rock' - Jefferson Airplane was on the cover inside plastic boxes in a salt quarry. It had formal portraits of Cream, The Mothers, The Doors and Big Brother. Frank Zappa wrote an essay, and there was this band practicing I had never heard of Ars Nova.

I still have that nmagazine...someplace.

Just saw a Reel about Jerry ...& was thinking :
Bob Dylan observed when Jerry passed - there are a lot of worlds from Hank Williams to Ornette Coleman - & Garcia traveled them all.
Myself ...I find myself bouncing around between PowerPop, FolkRawks - & pure Improvisation as per Jazz &~or Psychedelia. With a strong base in the Heavy BloozRawks (being chronically Gittarcentric...) & a certain notable dose of the ProtoPunks (Stooges, MC5, Dolls...) But ...no one's obliged to be concerned with that of course...
So in my old age still an identity crisis about what I even add up to

...oh. & then there was this band called Television...
