Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

M Squad borrowed a little from Now's the Time? Hi!

I’ve always been puzzled about why Parker hired Miles, whose trumpet skills were not great at the time. And he had almost no experience playing w national-level acts, no?

I think the story is that Sadik Hakim was a little too amped up, so Dizzy relieved him.

Maybe he knew he could push him around a bit? And maybe also wanted a contrasting style from the trumpet (which Miles definitely took from when he was picking sax players).

Well, I think Parker’s record in paying side musicians was spotty, and Miles would be less likely to complain. “Go back to Julliard if you don’t like it!”

Miles now sounds totally assured. Two tracks from this session followed by an aircheck... yeah, following up this session with a gig at the Roost, can you imagine?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm

↳ Listener Gregory @7:41
Indeed. First recorded by Ammons & Stitt as "Swampy" if memory serves. Then the ornamentation got added and it was credited to Richard Carpenter, who certainly didn't write it and certainly was a piece of work. The kinda guy where you check that your wallet is still in your pocket after he walks away.

↳ Song: "Solar" by "Miles Davis Quintet"
In contrast with a lot of great compositions, "Solar" was quickly picked up by many... and yet this is the only other time Miles is caught on tape performing it. (Originally from the flip side of the Walkin' LP)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
DJ Peter:

↳ tom tom the pipers son @8:28
I hear a lot of Lester in Miles's playing: the mid-register, laying back rhythmically, floating over the chord changes (unlike Coleman Hawkins), making a virtue of the frailty of his tone...
Avatar 🕰 8:31pm
Listener Gregory:

↳ DJ Peter @8:29
Is it based on the chords of How High the Moon? I've heard it a few dozen times, but this is the first it's occurred to me. I am not that sharp.
Avatar 🕰 Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
Jeff Golick:

↳ DJ Peter @8:29
I believe Solar is shown/notated on Davis's gravestone. And also that there is some question around authorship?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
DJ Peter:

↳ Listener Gregory @8:31
The intriguing thing about Solar (and I think why musicians took to it) is that you can play it as a 12-bar blues, but it has intriguing harmonies if you want to lean into them.
Avatar 🕰 8:32pm
Listener Gregory:

↳ Jeff Golick @8:31
An authorship dispute involving Miles? Come on, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
DJ Peter:

There's similarity to "How High the Moon" for sure, but it cycles back after 12 bars... maybe foreshadowing a characteristic of the Wayne-Herbie-Ron-Tony quintet's compositions, which disguise where the form repeats
Avatar 8:41pm
tom tom the pipers son:

Speaking of tone... to me this is Miles at his absolute technical peak, where he can make the trumpet do whatever he wants. Of course what made him an amazing artist was that he could do great things when his lip wasn't cooperating too.

Correction: the Ammons-Stitt release (4/26/1950) was named "Gravy." 3/4 of this session has Carpenter's name on the tracks. It has been reported that Carpenter found musicians who needed money (habitually) and got his name on their compositions in the process.
