Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from May 24, 2024 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Speaking of groups with different lineups, I got tickets to see Asia at the Paramount in Huntington and Geoff Downes is the only original in the current lineup. Carl Palmer is sitting out of this tour due to his own tour so they got the next best thing, Virgil Donati as the replacement. Probably the closest drummer to Carl Palmer, Neal Peart and John Bonham that is playing today.

Like my dad. He did two tours in Asia. First as as part of the occupational force in Japan, then he was called back during the Korean conflict.

One day I asked him why he joined the Air Force in the first place. "I couldn't get a job! All those guys coming back from WW2 were favored over everybody else, including me!"

I escaped my the hair on my nuts. The Paris Peace Accord was signed in January 1983, thus officially starting the de-escalation in Vietnam. I turned eighteen seven months later. The draft board apparently hadn't heard the news - I still had to register. But of course by then they had CO status forms next to the door. I dutifully filled out one and filed it. Of course I was denied. I stuck the letter in my sock drawer and got on with my life.

Twenty years later I went to Vietnam as a tourist. It seemed like the country was still littered with remnants of the war.

It was like this when I went: French tourists fawned over the Vietnamese, and were met with indifference. For their advisory role in the NORTH, Russian tourists were HATED. When the inevitable question 'Where you from?' was directed at me, and I said America, it was thumbs up 'America number one!'

I was knocked sideways. After what we did!?

I was a stranger in a strange land for sure.

I was reading an article in the local paper recently about how few piano movers there are left, at least around here. These guys repair and resell pianos as well, but at this point most of their business is simply moving the ones nobody wants, including some very nice ones. The damaged ones they tend to pull apart and salvage what they can. Some people just buy the wood from them.
