↳ Song: "Auroral Flare" by "Kochi"
Lot of Miles alums on this one: Al Foster, Steve Grossman, Dave Liebman, Reggie Lucas, M'tume...
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 9:18am
DJ Peter:

"Kochi" gives me the chance to share another kind of "milestone": Mrs DJP and I have been working out way through the Zatoichi movies in order and last night watched no. 21, "Zatoichi goes to the Fire Festival" (1970) and it was absolutely insane! Male and female nudity! A supporting role played by a popular androgynous/trans star! A set piece featuring a husband-and-wife comedy team! A huge yakuza battle in a bathhouse (source of most of the male nudity)! A crazed ronin haunted by visions of his wife's infidelity who kills everyone who threatens Zatoichi because Zatoichi is his to kill! (We also enjoyed a nice Ginjo Genshu style sake called "Bushido" which was too on the nose but delightful.)

I found a bargain eBay copy of the beautiful Criterion boxset (clever design: it has both Blu-Ray and DVD disks so the box is sized so that it can fit on a shelf with DVD sized cases or turned on its side with Blu-Ray disks.
Many of the movies are streaming and I bet the Criterion channel makes them periodically available.

↳ Song: "Sign O' the Times" by "Prince"
There were rumors of a Prince/Miles session, probably made too much sense to happen. There was mutual respect there, but egos through the roof

all in all Prince wasn't very original, but he was expert at repackaging his influences

↳ Song: "Time" by "Sly & the Family Stone"
Sly really more of on influence ON Miles than the other way around, but couldn't resist, so here we are.

Bowie took it to the next level, but with him there was a lot of originality too

Most art has been this way, forever. Even breakthroughs usually come from somewhere

I got the large Sign O The Times reissue, and there was a concert video included, and my memory is that Miles appeared onstage in a cameo. My memory is also that it wasn't very successful.

So this is channeling (in part) the pre-electric In a Silent Way.

I think music lingers longer at first, so the threads are easier to see. Visual arts last long but there tends to be a gap between fame and established recognition (which means starvation for artists)

i do wonder how much post modern visual art will be remembered or if there's a built in obsolescence to it

They were real (maybe) or at least representative of real people. Sharpening our verbal skills is good practice, and I'm tired of agreeing anyway

There might be, and some might be remembered because of it. Curator logic is one filter, not crucial but mid-term it matters

When we went to The Broad Museum to see Kid Congo, I took a good look at the collection, and my take away was - it's kind of like eating potato chips - an incomplete meal at best.
