A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

One of the perks of working for Southern Pacific (when my dad worked for them) was: free railroad housing. The downside: there is usually a set of tracks along one side of your house. Most of our houses growing up were very close to train lines.

↳ Song: "Fast Train" by "The Estranged"
It's been over 10 years since they have put out any records, but there was a five year span in Portland where this was one of the COOLEST bands around, and their records are all pretty excellent. It would be cool if they played shows again... I never got to see them.

I was raised on Odetta's version of "Little Red Caboose." My parents bought me a Sears guitar when I was 6, and Mom used that song for my beginner's lesson. But I never got the hang of guitar, and still can't do much on the guitar, other than making weird noises with it.

I know about this band because of The Ramen City Kid, who would regularly corner me when we lived together, and make me listen to the latest weird record that he'd just purchased.

And I'm better for it!

↳ Song: "New River Train" by "Monroe Brothers"
My friend Vicky teaches the "Country Music" lecture for a History of Rock and Roll class at Portland State University, and her lecture invovles a CD of her picks, for important country songs in the evolution of the genre, that led to rock and roll. This song is from her CD. Her lecture is great. I have seen it twice, back when I was a student. Vicky later DJ'd my wedding.

Just making a quick cameo before beddy-bye to let know how much I'm enjoying your ever-entertaining show Austin!

As an aside, I'd love a copy of DJ Vicky's wedding playlist, or a show with some of it highlighted!

Good evening to you and to one and all!

Considering how expensive shows are, it might actually be cheaper to spend a ticket for the cruise then to see all those bands individually.

I think the biggest question becomes: what would that third hour actually be, if I did expand my show? I always seem to have about 20 minutes more material than I thought, but I'm not sure I could consistently fill three hours... unless I depended on filling it with a lot of old Over The Edge episodes or something.

I've always liked Tom Waits. My mom used to listen to his first album when I was a kid. I thought all his albums sounded like that first album... and they do not! But I'm still a fan. One of the best shows I ever saw was Tom Waits... with The Ramen City Kid!

Exactly. Unless I was to actually have more live Zoom calls, I'm not sure I have enough juice to fill a full extra hour.

I love Dead Moon. I was lucky enough to have The Ramen City Kid introduce me to them, and I saw them four or five times (maybe more?) when they were together. I wish I'd seen them more; they really were one of the best things about living in Portland back then.

My friend Tim was wearing his Dead Moon shirt in the darkroom last night.. and the teacher was all, "...what's a Dead Moon?" And this other guy ran out and shouted, "Only the greatest band EVER! Way better than the Beatles!" (He knew that'd rankle the teacher)
