Favoriting June 9, 2024: Barron's Landscape

Fretting his art upon the Stork Cub stage today: 5 hours of the music of Philadelphia-born, 81-year old Kenny Barron- still going strong. From his beginnings with James Moody, Dizzy Gillespie, and Yusef Lateef, to the many bands of his own, as well as loads of contributions to others’ recordings - such as Stan Getz, Freddie Hubbard, Abbey Lincoln, and that’s just the yadda. Tune in for the other yaddas

Hey, folks on a slightly bummerish note: due to the unreasonable length of today's program, I pre-recorded nearly the first three hours, only to find that due to weirdness with the recording computer, there are little glitches throughout most of those 3 hours - I tried to clean things up as time would allow, but i couldn't get everything. So if you should hear a stanky sound, 'tis I to blame. Do not adjust your sets. grrrr!!! Sorry! The last 2 hours are fine.

Interesting piece in NYT about countertenors:
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/04/arts/music/handel-opera-glynebourne-festival.html?unlocked_article_code=1.yU0.ymml.xQhnyoGv8L7I&smid=url-share

If I had a musical bone in my body, I'd have opted to sing countertenor. Unmentioned in the article, Dominique Visse, who sang with the early Les Arts Florissants. His is a reedy, rustic voice, perfect for his role as one of the witches in Purcell's Dido & Aeneas.

As Thurston is a local lad these days, he's made a ton of 'guest appearances' and possibly become a little over-exposed of late. I confess I'd got rather blasé about it. Then recently I reviewed the Walls Have Ears reissue (mid 80s quasi official SY bootleg), and I fell in love with SY all over again and realised (with his recent health issues) that I'd better start treasuring him again. He was on blistering form, and the rapport with JPJ was obvious. They were amazing together.

A rare afternoon where I get to hear all Stork, no vinyl, and it's a 5 hour wunderbar event. Thank you Stork this is an outstanding show today! Cheers everyone, cooking and cocktail time, likely not on the accu as much if at all.

At least one piano no. 1, I believe. For example, when we saw Melford and Fujii, they used two. But I don't know the model(s).

I don't see the artist/song displaing on my wfmu app - anybody have that problem? The web playlist looks fine.

No flight for me (ear trouble). After last week's fall I had 7 stitches removed on Friday. Yesterday I found an extra one, used a compass, nail clippers and tweezers to remove it, with partial success. Got the rest out (I think) today, made an amazing difference (stitch in chin, legs/hip hobbled) Makes no sense, but I can rise easier now that I got that out of my chin

I think that's a cuica drum, if what I heard is what you mean. Which brings old Richard Nixon to mind, who once said "I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure that you realize that what you heard is not what I meant." Whoops, blew my own mind again.

I read about the injury you had, glad you're doing better (removing sutures is not rocket science-the reason for having people in to remove is mostly to be sure it's healed well without infection, and also that people are mostly squeamish about doing it themselves)

When I got stitches in my hand recentishly, I asked if I could take them out myself. "No," said the nurse, and handed me a suture removal kit.

Cute! (one more reason I didn't mention-the scissor you use remove the stitches should be sterile, so she gave you the kit)

That's the fun of concussions, how do you know?
More seriously, how is it going for your daughter? UCB is kinda a big deal, but also not that much. How is she dealing with it?

I think that Clarence Thomas was the New Orleans sax player who mostly made a living playing R&B gigs and music for tourists in New Orleans but did pop / hard bop as well and occasional gigs with New Orleanians like Idris Muhammad.
