@northguineahills, when I was one, my family moved to Sheepshead Bay. But, my Nana continued to live on Tompkins Ave and ran her “pocketbook” store until the late ‘60s. So, I made frequent visits to the “old neighborhood” throughout the ‘50s and ‘60s. Experienced the grittiest urban decay (but, with a lot of soul) and the recent fruits of gentrification (kinda soulless).

I'm sure you all know, as the article I just posted touches on, that Nilsson spent most of the latter period of his career writing jingles for TV ads. Most of you may remember the Gorton's seafood commercials. That's the man himself singing the jingle at the end of every one of the ads.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like Nilsson never went through an "experimental" phase...he always remained faithful to the fundamentals of pop songcraft. You can hear his respect for it in the way he sings standards.

@tom tom the pipers son. I remember STEREO REVIEW magazine selected "NILSSON SINGS NEWMAN" as one of its six pop/rock/ jazz ALBUMS OF THE YEAR(they also selected six classical recordings each year as well). Loved the album, but I was so upset that the album was so incredibly short. Was RCA afraid of the royalty payments they would pay Mr. Newman? Randy is often not long-winded and has written many songs that are brief. But the Nilsson record could have been an all-time classic if Harry and his producers had chosen to cover maybe five or six additional tunes. I wonder if there are tapes of outtakes from those sessions lurking in the vaults somewhere.

First time I heard this tune, which was recently, it reminded me of Philadelphia 80's band The Hooters (still does). That just shows how ahead of his time Nilsson was in terms of writing rock tunes.

what few realize was John's Lost Weekend was leading to a Beatles reunion of sorts. A Toot & A Snore in '74 was Nilsson, Lennon, McCartney, and Stevie Wonder. my conjecture is Yoko took John back if only to prevent that reunion. John spent the next five years smoking weed and watching television while the hired help looked after Sean. Don't believe that House Husband nonsense for a second. It was good PR for the album.

Great "Hour With..." today, BOB! Since I babbled on and on about the brevity of Nilsson's Randy Newman album, it occurred to me that perhaps a future spotlight hour could be shone on Mr. Newman himself. 'Twould be nice!
