A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Peter Goldmark was part of the team that developed the LP. He also helped develop TV technology. My brother worked for him in the 70s transferring films to EVR cassettes.

Jeremy C. Long mostly performs under his own name these days, but this album was released under the name "Brown." Jeremy has played a few shows that I booked, but I haven't seen him since I moved to the Mid-Valley. A very nice gent; we used to get drinks on the regular, back in the day.

I was listening to stuff I did like this in the 90's, when had much less of a sense of how to do this. I miss some things about the "old days," but frankly, I'm better at this kind of radio, now that I have better tools to work with.

Sir Richard Bishop was in Sun City Girls, and now has a rather extensive solo career. He lives in PDX and plays / records often enough. (I last saw him play opening for Porest.)

Richard is also a rare book dealer, and specializes in books of an esoteric or "mystical" origin, a lot of stuff that is pretty old and pretty cool. I get to interact with him for both work (books) and for fun (music).

Super formal, stilted speech was my default until after college because I was a shy kid, always nose in a book, and I took a while to learn to be more "normal" in my speech. All those old books we had around really influenced me. And did not help me become less shy. Weird formal kids weren't necessarily a hit on the playground in the 80s!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Heather @11:11
I had the same problem. My mom had a bookstore when I was a kid, and I was always reading sci-fi and comics. So I sort of talked like some character from a sci-fi story. Most kids (and adults) found it a little unnerving to talk to me.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Song: "Praeludium" by "Aume"
One of the things I love about this Aume LP is that you have to ruin the cover, and cut part of the cover, to get the record out, and play it. In this day and age, there's often ways to find these kinds of albums online, but I do like that I had to devalue my record to hear it. There's something sort of creatively satisfying about that.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Austin Rich:

There's something about "The Ugly Duckling" that feels a little too optimistic to me. Certainly, we are all waiting for those moments when we find the people who will see us as beautiful, instead of as the way we feel. If only it were that easy.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:25pm

I think we can still leave comments, but certainly, we are sort of fighting against the system at this point.
