juneteenth NJ?
  8:10pm
v-dawg:

New Jersey made Juneteenth a holiday before the federal government. The third Friday in June is the observed day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
flannery:

oh nice. juneteenth week

Interesting. Does NJ continue to do that despite the Federal holiday now being on June 19th? Did NJ state employess have to work today but will get Friday off? Or get both days off?
  8:17pm
v-dawg:

Not like we are really doing anything. It is hot.

FREEDOM! Hi Flannery and esteemed guests
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
flannery:

hi feldy!
Avatar 🐛 Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
Dan S:

Yeah, Flan, you mentioned that it has cooled off a bit where you are. It's still full heat wave here and for the next few days.

Good question. I just read about it recently. I do not think NJ will change soon. (The legislature has its hands full right now anyway.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
flannery:

i know i forgot everywhere else is in heat dome. it'll be like 100 here tomorrow
  8:23pm
Lizzie:

Looks like NJ state observance of Juneteenth is Friday the 21st as per the state website.
Avatar 🐛 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
Feldy:

It's supposed to be 111 here on Friday, so avoid Phoenix if possible

I heard a radio (NPR) interview with the 'Grandmother of Juneteenth' Opal Lee earlier today. A very inspiring senior citizen.

Thanks, Flannery! Yes, I am in Phoenix. And I have a hot tub, so I can pretend I want to be hot. Little mind trick I play
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
flannery:

i know that trick. yeah its almost easier outside, is my crazy thing
Avatar 🐛 Swag For Life Member 8:41pm
Feldy:

The discomfort comes from resisting, right? When you try to resist the cold you get the shakes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
flannery:

yeah or the expectation of comfort. for me the hardest part is sleeping in a/c but also i keep the house pretty warm (i am cheap)
  8:46pm
Kat in the chat:

Sweet sounds, flannery. I’m cheap too, I have central air for the first time ever, but if I run it at all I keep it at 79 or 80
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
flannery:

yeah the house is at 80 and if u touch it!! god help u!!!
  8:50pm
v-dawg:

For my part, i have experienced both nice cold and oppressive heat in the summer time. When you have been in a house where it is <68°, you get very used to the nice situation. When you are in a house without any air conditioning...ugh!
Avatar 🐛 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
Dan S:

I'm kind of lucky in that my apt. is easy to keep around 74-75 F with minimal use of A/C. Perhaps that's because I face NW so don't get much direct Sun. On the other hand, I need lots of heat in the winter to keep this place warm.
Avatar 🐛 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm
Dan S:

Anyway, try to stay cool and safe, everybody. Flannery, thanks for the show and have a good week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm
flannery:

thanks and you too!!!
  8:59pm
v-dawg:

Interestingly...my childhood summer situation had a certain dichotomy. One set of grandparents had a house near the ocean, the other set had a house in a mountainous area. I think that i complained more often at the shore house, but more vocally at the mountain house.
When i visited italy in the summer, i experienced the mountains and the beach and the city.
I recommend a visit to Rome in August, just for a day; it was quite an experience.
