Dean:

Further background on the Price piece drawn from the notes to the Avie recording from 2022, cond. Michael Repper:

"Ethiopia’s Shadow in America demonstrates the impact of international events upon Black artistry in the early 20th century. ‘Ethiopia’ was often used generically in relation to people of African descent. But Italy’s attempted fascist conquests of Ethiopia gave the East African nation greater significance in the minds of Black American creative artists like Price. The evocation of Ethiopia in Price’s title therefore alludes to herawareness of the transnational and transhistorical injustices experienced by people of African descent."

i really can't stand Billy Joel; but to be honest, most of the music played over the pa where i work my 2nd (overnight) job is so bad when Billy Joel comes on it's a slight relief! ...and it's usually *the worst* Billy Joel (i think. i hope.) 1980-1983 period.
