Point of convo: That black sweatshirt with the red stripe I'm wearing in the pic with CB was purchased in the early 90s. I still have it and wear it all the time and it's still like new. No holes in the armpits, no undone stitching, no stains, no nothin'. It is the most resilient article of clothing I've ever owned.

A friend of mine has made the argument that pop is dead because a 50s pop song is noticeably different from a 60s pop song, which is different from a 70s pop song, the same being true for pop songs from the 80s and the 90s as well. But then in the 2000s, innovation just... stopped. So a 2003 pop song sounds just like one from today.

I think it's genre-dependent. I mean, I don't think, e.g., hip-hop has really evolved much (in a positive direction) since Missy Elliott and MF Doom, but that's probably a bias of my g-g-g-generation…

That point was made in a recent article about meldoic simplicty thats ocurring, that there are other forms of complexity that are taking it's place. And rap was mentioned as not included in the analysis due to the difficulty of assigning melody or hamrony.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Mike Lupica:

↳ Hunterian @10:54
That's fair, as least as far as mainstream stuff goes. (And I do love Missy Elliott... probably a hair more tham MF Doom, TBH). But there's a lot of super messed-up underground stuff still happening that I think speaks to the genre's experimental roots.

Yes, well of course once you start talking "underground" stuff, pretty much every show on this station provides evidence against the notion that pop music broadly construed hasn't evolved much in the past 20 years. I think there's lots of great new music, just not what counts for mainstream pop these days. I think we're basically agreeing…

I have somehow never heard Fuckbuttons but I love their name, as long as it is a thinly-veiled reference to broadcast studio "dump" buttons meant to excise naughty words from the FCC-monitored airwaves.

There's a great episode of Seven Second Delay in which Ken and Andy abuse the fuckbutton. I'm sure that was part of the inspiration.

How could you forget the gorgeous Madeleine Stowe, also known for classing up the truly moronic Unlawful Entry (1992), w/Ray Liotta and Kurt Russell?
