  10:06pm
Dean:

Oh, now I get the call of the question. New tires are fine on the spectrum of stuff ya gotta do. For me, it's camp for my daughter and on-campus college orientations for my son.

Upgrading my turntable made me feel great. And I'm getting poised to do it again. We're talking a shit-ton of money for an aluminum sub-chassis. A shit-ton. As in more than a mortgage payment.

Tires, or that one weird sensor that went out a few months back that measures the air plressure on one tire on our vehicle. That was an adult purchase, and not cheap! At least the ride has a WFMU sticker on it...

I really liked paying way too much for a crappy hotel room when it turned out my (former?) relatives had given away the room we were supposed to stay in for my aunt's memorial.

Great trip. Five stars, no notes.
  10:10pm
Dean:

There are boring expenses, and then there are irrational ones (like turntable sub-chassis). Once I bought two ties, because I like ties, even though I no longer wear them even once a year. Total buyer's regret. It was my anniversary, and my wife and I had reservations at a good Berkeley restaurant. I wore one of the ties. The server's first comment upon approaching us was, "That is a beautiful tie!" Purchase vindicated! And it is in fact a beautiful tie.

@Karl: Well, duh. I knew that you knew I was going to say that.

My favorite past future present schtick is Harold Bloom's, who one argued that his theory of anxiety of influence applied anachronistically. Thus, Chaucer suffered anxiety in competition with Shakespeare, which accounts for Chaucer's Shakespearean exuberance.
