James Brown's influence really is incalculable. When I was "digging in the crates" I was astounded by how many references there are to him. He also prompted the careers of Prince and Michael Jackson. Fela and JB influenced each other as contemporaries as is very apparent! ;-) Thanks for hanging out Eugene! ;-)

I commented elsewhere to this effect: My kids turned me onto Stephen Sanchez, a young pop vocalist, whose album I really enjoy. I suggested to my daughter that she should check out Orbison's "Crying," which seems an obvious influence on Sanchez. She did, and she loves it.

I gave Shania Twain short shrift. My brother loved her, even met her at a concert.

Even Irwin Chusid played Sanchez. There's a salutary turn by younger artists to a retro style that really tries to tap what made the older great singers so great. Some of it's production quality, but also sheer crooning.
