Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from July 23, 2024 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

↳ Song: a song
So this is a photo of the tape, in the wilds of the Mid-Valley, on the trip where we finally got to listen to these tapes. It was a lovely time, drinking and telling stories and listening to tapes, without the internet or phones. So I wanted to recreate that for ya'll.

↳ Song: "Life's A Long, Hard, Dusty Road" by "Leroy"
Mr. Fab was talking about this in a conversation we had not long ago, and my playlists are often overly detailed. I like that, but I was thinking about Mix-Tapes, and how you were lucky to get the names of the songs, and the artists, depending on the person making the tape. So I tried to re-create that feeling of just knowing the artist and the title. (Which is all the info inside the tape itself.)

My mom once gave me a huge box of 7"s, which were not all great, but went a long way to introducing me to a lot of older rock and roll that I quite love. She used to manage a used bookstore / record store, and it was the last box of things leftover from the business. I had already pillaged her collection for LPs before that, and even gave away of a ton of her records without really making a dent in the collection. I still have a CRAZY number of her records, that I just can't get rid of. Yet.

↳ laurapanic @9:38
A band I quite like, that is local, who I have had on this show a few times, gave me a test pressing of their only LP, which they also gave me a copy of when it was officially pressed. Not much difference in the copies, and really, they're not quite famous enough for that to be collectible. But it is one of the only test pressings I have.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
Austin Rich:

My first idea was to take both tapes The Ramen City Kid made, and edit them into a "best of" show. But that would require cutting just over 30 minutes of songs from both tapes, and in the end, too many great songs would have to be cut. So instead, remembered that 90 minutes of music usually fills a two hour show, the way I babble, so I decided to preserve the tapes as they were originally made, with only the smallest improvements here and there.

If I could be a time-traveling ghost, I'd go back to 1940s Manhattan: Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and Elmo Hope would get together, go into piano stores, and play until they got kicked out - then go to the next piano store...

That's so cool!

I have thought about a time-travel concert service. That seems useful.

That comic is THE BEST. I still have another book I haven't finished.

Just re-read my collection… minus a couple books that I seem to have misplaced…

This song is incomplete, as it is on the original tape. Just setting you up for what's to come.

This guy used to be the singer for a band called Auktyon - one of the best shows I ever saw.

It's really excellently written. And makes great camping reading!

Basically, I want to sit in the woods and read comics and listen to tapes forever.

Because everything else is awful.

Cats are not awful. Cheese is not awful.

Next time I re-read it I wanted to keep a tally of how many people he kills tho cause dat bunny is definitely a mass murderer. I can kinda see why Jei thinks he’s evil. And most of the people he kills are bandits who are realistically just desperate peasants who barely know how to handle a sword. I wonder if Stan Sakai ever thinks similar thoughts 😂

I think about that every once in a while.

Wasn't there supposed to be an animated series at one point, recently?

There was?! I missed that news!
