Scratchy vanity 45s, pilfered field recordings, muddy off-the-radio sounds, homemade congregational tapes and vintage commercial gospel throw-downs; a little preachin', a little salvation, a little audio tomfoolery.

Pastor Gregory Macon  Bow Down   Favoriting single    "Whooping" (also given as "hooping") is a term for a Black (African American) oratorical and homiletic (sermon) style that some pastors use at the end of their sermons to heighten the spirit and emotions of their congregations. Whooping is described as pastors speaking in a call & response, sing/song cadence. Responses to the pastor's words ("call") are from the congregation which might repeat his or her words, and/or shout "Amen!", "Preach!", "Yes, Lord" or other words and phrases. Responses also include riffs played by the pianist, organist, and snare drummer. In addition to preaching in that sing/song style, pastors who whoop toward the end of their sermons may also sing during that whoop.

Made it. We’re back in Lafayette, LA again since Weds afternoon, where we’ve been living for almost all of the last three weeks — now overseeing the cleanout of two houses owned here by Mary Ellen’s late aunt/godmother. She was a retired teacher and assistant principal, but also a hoarder. It’s gonna take 3-4-5 days to get the first home cleaned, which we started on at 9am today.

Well, there was a modest estate left by the aunt, so a five-person cleaning crew with a 30 cubic yard dumpster is doing a lot of it. Dumpster almost full after a 9-5 day today, gets emptied tomorrow morning.

I'm keeping a bunch of stuff in Don's bedroom (formerly Bob's, Kwadwo's, and Steve's) in the hope that he'll still recover abilities for independent living. His urologist says voluntary micturition can still return as much as 6 months after a stroke, and we're only halfway there.

Right now no rooms for nobody nohow. Every room is six feet high with stuff and little foot-wide paths she left to get from here to there. We’re trying to get to where an inspector can see how salvageable the house structures are. We sit in the car if we need some a/c for awhile, while at the house we’re working on.

A lot of what I salvaged resided on my living room floor for months, including a lot of stainless steel steam/cold table trays that I shipped out to home soap makers who said they'd take them for the shipping cost. I knew them from a CompuServ forum.
Avatar 8:48pm
axlotl:

Note: that was a "witty" appreciation of his music, not a change in beliefs on my part [eyeroll]. There still isn't a god.
  8:48pm

Peter had the trays for his deli business, and the home soap makers could used them for curing blocks of soap to be cut up later.

I wanted to stay friendly with the soap makers in the hope of getting their help commercializing on my bubble bath formula. Eventually some went in with me on a co-op buy of a small locally made batch by someone in the South Bronx who did it at cost in the hope of future business.
