Hello Gary and folks.

Very surprised to not see this track with lots of past favorite clicky stars. Don't see any naming or spelling deviations that would separate the playlist entry from when others may have played it. Surprised.

A 2007 illustration of "uniquity" in OED, culled from Renaissance Quarterly, has me curious to see the entire source. It reads, "Early modern anxieties about the uniquity of humanity."

Sternpost does seem to be tapping influences from various tributaries of prog rock, e.g., Canterbury sound. So, not absolutely incomparable. But then everything is like everything else.

I was thinking "Compared to What?" referred to the opposite phenomenon, when completely unfamiliar music nevertheless invokes something so eerily familiar. The Nonesuch Explorer LP Turkish Village Music came to mind. Upon first playing it (thank you, public library) I felt I was hearing something utterly familiar to me, but unplaceably so. ("Unplaceable" is a word, so I took liberties.)

You're right, Gary. Our tendency is to square our circumstances with what we know, and so we try to shoehorn the unfamiliar into patterns of familiarity. Ironically, I "compared" Sternpost to Cafe Jacques, a band I otherwise find entirely incomparable.

From bandcamp:

"Although some analogues can be made to 70s era Robert Wyatt, Brian Wilson’s lush arrangements or Slapp Happy’s charming avant–pop, Herbertsson has done an impeccable job of distilling these influences into his own defined sound. From the production to the compositions, nothing about 'Ulrika' feels modern, the entire affair sounding like it could have been released in 1972 (in the best way possible)."
