That last set made me wanna release a record that someone might find in the thrift store someday. Over zippy music, the announcer intones:“records are wonderful things. They can be used for so many purposes. Like teaching karate! You probably thought you needed visuals to learn something like karate, didn’t you? or for a fashion show? But no, with records, you can do all of these things. And more!”

Hearing those multiple takes of the commercial triggers a memory: I was once the tape operator (engineer is too big a word) for a radio station when Allen Toussaint was recording a station ID. The text was agreed upon, Allen did an unrecorded read. We did a take. It sounded good but for best practice I always got at least two takes. I said, that sounded good, can we do one more take. Toussaint said he thought we got it and saw no need for another take. I requested that I needed a safety take, just in case of a tech issue. Toussaint glared at me for a very long few seconds. He looked at the text and testily said "are you ready". I said yes, thank you, tape rolling. He gave a perfunctory reading. Obviously inferior to the first one. I said thank you. He said nothing and left.
