Schoorsteen in the past
'Schoorsteen' is a very old word. It was already used in the 13th century, perhaps even earlier. In Middle Dutch, this word meant the fireplace, with the stone or wooden smoke trap directly above it. That smoke trap protruded slightly and was supported, 'brace', by stones. The 'chimney' therefore consisted of stones that braced "Schoren" the smoke trap.
